The altar frontal features a contemporary stylized Jerusalem Cross flanked by two vertical stripes. The five red squares can be seen as the wounds of Christ (hands, feet, and side) on the cross. The cross and vertical stripes are made from the same material, but because the grain runs differently, the appear to be different shades of purple when viewed from most angles.
The chalice veil repeats the vertical stripe with one red square.
