Day of Pentecost—May 19, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Ezekiel 37:1-14 | Psalm 104:24–34, 35b | Acts 2:1–21 | John 15:26–27; 16:4b–15
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises not to leave us alone but to send the Advocate to speak to and for us. Many of us have done our best to tame the Holy Spirit, but the Spirit is untamable and unpredictable. Like the wind, the Holy Spirit blows where it will. May we be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, experience God’s presence anew, and hear God in our native language of love.

We expect this sermon to be available soon.

Ascension of Our Lord (transferred)—May 12, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 1:1–11 | Psalm 47 | Ephesians 1:15–23 | Luke 24:44–53
Summary: Today’s lesson have two different accounts of the Ascension. Both have pyrotechnics, and in both Jesus tells the disciples that they will be sent out as witnesses. We are witnesses, but witnesses to what? Partly we tell the stories of miracles and healing, but mostly we are witness to hope for starving children, the sick, victims of war, and brokenness. That hope comes because God has left the Holy Spirit in each of us, and she is active within us.

Sixth Sunday of Easter—May 5, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 10:44–48 | Psalm 98 | 1 John 5:1–6 | John 15:9–17
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus call us to abide in God’s love and to love each other. Is Jesus just a visitor in our homes, or does Jesus really abide with us? For Jesus to truly abide in us, we need to be willing to rearrange the furniture and tear down the walls that hold back love. For many of us, this may be difficult, but God has chosen us and we can choose to abide in God’s love.

Fifth Sunday of Easter—April 28, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 8:26–40 | Psalm 22:25–31 | 1 John 4:7–21 | John 15:1–8
Summary: In today’s first lesson, we read about the Ethiopian eunuch. He was an outsider and didn’t understand what he was reading in Isaiah, but the Holy Spirit led Philip to him, and Philip baptized him. Too often we set up barriers, but Philip understood that the vine referenced in the Gospel produces fruit of all who seek.

Fourth Sunday of Easter / Earth Day Sunday—April 21, 2024

Preacher: LCH Players
Lessons: Acts 4:5–12 | Psalm 23 | 1 John 3:16–24 | John 10:11–18
Summary: The LCH Players give a dramatic reading of Old Turtle by Douglas Wood, Illustrated by Cheng-Khee Chee. This story explores different ideas about the nature of God.

We expect this sermon to be available soon.

Third Sunday of Easter—April 14, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Phyllis Hörmann
Lessons: Acts 3:12–19 | Psalm 4 | 1 John 3:1–7 | Luke 24:36b–48
Summary: I just returned from a visit to the first church I served, which celebrated its 140th anniversary. This reminds me that we are all connected in a tapestry woven together by a common spiritual thread. Our Gospel tells of the third time Jesus meets the disciples after the resurrection. They are again at first terrified, but after eating with them, Jesus sends them to witness to the resurrection. Because the two men walking to Emmaus and the women had shared their previous experiences, the disciples are finally ready to be sent out. God, who raised Jesus, is with us in our chaotic world, and we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us. May we continue to witness so the world around us may flourish as a wonderfully varied tapestry.

Second Sunday of Easter—April 7, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 4:32–35 | Psalm 133 | 1 John 1:1–2:2 | John 20:19–31
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples hiding in the upper room and says, “Peace be with you.” Our lives are full of real fears, and Jesus offers the peace that gives us courage to engage with the world and imagine new dreams.

Easter Sunday—March 31, 2024

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 10:34–43 | Psalm 118:1–2, 14–24 | 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 | Mark 16:1–8
Summary: On this Easter Sunday we witness to what God is doing in the world. It is not about events in the past, but about what is happening now. Christ is still alive and Jesus’ words about life, freedom, and justice are still at work. We are the body of Christ, filled with the Spirit and sent to proclaim the Good News that Christ is risen!
