Continuing the Journey towards Wholeness
During the 2023–24 program year, LCH will extend last year’s theme of Healing a Broken World and continue out journey of healing. With God’s help, as well as the support of everyone in the LCH ‘ohana, we hope to move ever closer to wholeness and well-being or God’s shalom.
- December: Introducing our Theme—Writing for the Stewardship Team, Phyllis Hörmann introduced our new theme and listed the five focusses over the coming year. “During December and January, we will focus on in-reach and community renewal. There will be occasional community building activities, in-person visits, especially to those who are unable to come to church, and phone visits.” She invited us all to “watch for details about ways that we can strengthen the bonds that connect us.” Read the entire article….
- January: Spiritual Health and Wellbeing—Phyllis Hörmann observed that “the attitude I bring to [mundane] tasks often impacts others” and went on to “invite everyone to think about this as we discern the ways the Spirit is acting through us in our daily lives.” Read the entire article….
- February: Art and Healing I—Bill Potter wrote about ways that art—and even just looking at art—can lead to healing. He invited members of the LCH ‘ohana to sessions exploring “how reading poetry can be part of a pathway to healing and how the engagement with poetry and poetic language can soothe and mend ragged spirits.” Read the entire article….
- March: Art and Healing II— Willow Chang wrote “An important healing balm for my spirit and soul has always been movement in its various forms.” She went on to invite folks to join her for two classes in beginning veil dancing. Read the entire article….
- April: Creation Care I—Cindy Scheinert began by observing “that water is used throughout the Bible as a powerful symbol of God’s ever-flowing grace and new life” and continued, “Although God’s life-giving water is pure and abundant, our planet’s supply of fresh water is not.” The Stewardship Team will have several events during April and May focussing on water. - May: Creation Care II—Cindy Scheinert continued with theme of water and announced opportunities to help clean up the Ala Wai Canal and plant trees along the Hale‘iwa Stream. Read the entire article….
- June: Stewardship of Our Stuff I—Barbara Poole-Street began by noting that “the consumerism prevalent in our modern world negatively impacts the quality and quantity of our natural resources, reinforces income disparities world-wide, and results in environmental conditions that negatively impact the environment and lead to climate change.” She then introduced some activities to help folks figure out ways good stewards can respond. - July: Stewardship of Our Stuff II—Phyllis Hörmann reviewed some of them ideas for stewardship of our stuff that have been raised in Adult Forum and announced a Free Store for the Makiki neighborhood to be held in September Read the entire article….
- August: Connecting with Our Neighbors I—Phyllis Hörmann described some of the ways that LCH already connects with our neighbors and enriches the community. She also provided more information about the Free Store coming in September. Read the entire article….
- September: Connecting with Our Neighbors II—Barbara Poole-Street encouraged members of the LCH ‘ohana to bring items for the Free Store and sign up to help set up for the event, provide hospitality during the event, and clean up after the event. Read the entire article….
- October—Cindy Scheinert examines the verses in Thessalonians that call for us to “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.” She ends by remembering that “one of my mother’s favorite hymns begins, ‘On our way rejoicing; gladly let us go.’ May this be us at LCH as we go forward into our church’s 125th year, called and blessed to do God’s work.” Read the entire article…. - November—Bill Potter recounts hearing about Pr. Jeff’s passing while visiting Japan and realizing that the verses from Thessalonians can help him respond by “rejoic[ing] always, pray[ing] continually, giv[ing] thanks in all circumstances.
