Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 17—July 28, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Hosea 1:2–10 | Psalm 85 | Colossians 2:6–19 | Luke 11:1–13
Summary: In today’s second lesson, Paul is concerned that th new faith was drifting from its center. In the Gospel, Luke givens the shorter version of the Lord’s Prayer, but we often hurry through this prayer and miss the deep meaning. For example, as Luther points out in his “Shorter Catechism,” it is not enough for us to have our own bread, we need to live so that all people have the necessities of life. We are called to be a church that prays together, so I will finish by asking you all to spend some time in prayer.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 16—July 21, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Amos 8:1–12 | Psalm 52 | Colossians 1:15–28 | Luke 10:38–42
Summary: Many of us try to categorize each other according to today’s Gospel story of Mary and Martha, but that misses the point of the story. Jesus says that Martha is distracted by many things, but that only one thing is important. He does not say what that is in this story, but elsewhere we learn that it is to love God and love each other. In this story Jesus does not criticize Martha, and we never find out what happens between the sisters. There are roles for each of us, and each role is valid as long as we love God and love each other.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 15—July 14, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Lessons: Amos 7:7–17 | Psalm 82 | Colossians 1:1–14 | Luke 10:25–37
Summary: In today’s Gospel parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus shows us that we who are loved without reason need the stranger to teach us to receive grace. Just as the beaten man needed the Samaritan to be saved, we often need the help of those we dislike if we are to find the kingdom of God. We are not called to like everyone; we are called to be the hands of Christ in this world.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 14—July 7, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: 2 Kings 5:1–14 | Psalm 30 | Galatians 6:1–16 | Luke 10:1–11, 16–20
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus send out the disciples to invite people into the kingdom of God. We Lutherans are good at welcoming, but we we are not good at inviting people. Jesus calls us to a dialog with people where we listen to their stories, share our stories, and find God in that process.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 13—June 30, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Lessons: 2 Kings 2:1–2, 6–14 | Psalm 77:1–2, 11–20 | Galatians 5:1, 13–25 | Luke 9:51–62
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus interacts with disciples trying to figure out how to respond to the call of discipleship. We may even see Jesus as trying to figure out how he is going to carry out the mission entrusted to him. Of course the call was clear, but as a human, Jesus had choices to make. We do not know what is ahead for us, but we know that we have been saved in Jesus, and we know that God is with us. We are called to give up the illusion of control and do the work of love God calls us to.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 12—June 23, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Lessons: 1 Kings 19:1–15a | Psalm 42–43 | Galatians 3:23–29 | Luke 8:26–39
Summary: In today’s first lesson, Elijah has just defeated the prophets of Baal, and now he is in the wilderness, afraid and ready to die. We have our own ups and downs with God, so we understand. We have our own wilderness activities that engage us until we collapse and fall asleep. And like with Elijah, God calls us to get up and go forward; God sends angels to wake us up and feed us; and God speaks to us in a still, small voice.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 9—June 2, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: 1 Kings 18:20–39 | Psalm 96 | Galatians 1:1–12 | Luke 7:1–10
Summary: This year we are using the “semicontinuous” lessons from the Hebrew scriptures, so we will be hearing a lot about the prophets who called the people to be bold in their faith. Today we hear about Elijah who challenged the priests of Baal and called the people back to God. Elijah reminded them that God had called them for the sake of the world. The words of the prophets were not comfortable or comforting, but they endured. We have our own enduring prophets like Bonhoeffer and Teresa of Avila and Paul and Jesus in today’s lessons. Who in your life is a prophet reminding you that God is with us?

The Holy Trinity—May 12, 2013
Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Lessons: Proverbs 8:1–4, 22–31 | Psalm 8 | Romans 5:1–5 | John 16:12–15
Summary: Trinity Sunday is the time in the church year when our imagination is least able to comprehend the theme of the day. We try to describe the undescribable God, and it doesn’t work. In the end, the creed will not save us; it is love that saves. The Trinity icon can help us because it helps us visualize relationship and openness. It invites us into relationship and helps us understand that we are made in the image of God.
