Discipleship Invitation

Aloha Members and Friends!

Last year we adopted the honu as our stewardship symbol. Like the turtle in the Aesop fable, she encouraged us to make a slow and steady step-up in stewardship of all God has given us. In 2010, we reflect on a different lesson from our honu guide. Scientists tell us that when honu eggs hatch, they begin the most perilous journey of their lives. After digging through the sand, each baby honu follows the light from darker beach to brighter ocean. In ancient times, it was a clear choice, but in the modern world baby honu can be distracted by light from street lamps or houses built on the beach. Still, the honu will only grow to adulthood by following the dawning light to the relative safety of the sea.

Jesus tells us in John, “I am the light of the world,” and like the baby honu who follows the light of the rising sun, it is by following the light of Christ that we are able to grow and transform into spiritual maturity.

This fall, we invite you to join with other members of the LCH ‘ohana as we seek to deepen our understanding and commitment to follow Jesus, our light, and become better disciples. Growing as disciples, we can respond to our calling to be the body of Christ in the world—to do God’s work, share our blessings, and spread the light.

We invite you to join one of the ‘ohana gatherings scheduled between October 4 and 18 in your neighborhood or at church. At each gathering, members of the LCH ‘ohana will share in fellowship, prayer, and discussion about what it means to be a disciple. Because each gathering will be limited to no more than eight members, please sign up at church or by phone (941-2566) or email (lch@lchwelcome.org) to the Church Office.

The current list of ‘ohana gatherings is printed on the back of this letter, and the most up-to-date list is available at <www.lchwelcome.org/ohana>.

Our season of ‘ohana gatherings will culminate with LutherFest on Saturday night, October 24,, when we will share food, fellowship, and fun centered on the traditions of our German founders of LCH and good old Martin Luther.

We pray that you will join with your fellow honu of the LCH ‘ohana as we seek to follow our light—Jesus—and to grow into mature disciples in our church, in our island home, and in our world.

In discipleship,
Your Stewardship Committee

P.S. We know you've read this letter just waiting for us to talk about money and pledge cards, but this really is all about discipleship, so we're not going to do it.

P.P.S. Well, OK. If you really want to know, we'll hand them out on Sunday, October 25, and give thanks for your pledges on Christ the King Sunday, November 22.
