In May 2011, the Lutheran Church of Honolulu launched a $250,000 Mission Campaign to fund three project that will support the mission of the church: calling an associate pastor, renovating the parking lot behind the church, and covering the Hörmann Courtyard.

2012–2013 Mission Campaign

God calls us to mission, and we each answer both individually and as a congregation. On May 21, 2011, a special congregational meeting launched the 2012–2013 Mission Campaign to provide staff and physical resources that will enable us to fulfill the congregation’s mission planning efforts over the past several years. The Mission Campaign will raise $250,000 over the next two years to fund three key initiatives:

Call an associate pastor to work in partnership with the existing staff (pastor, director of music and liturgy, and parish coordinator) to grow the mission of the congregation. The associate pastor will be a full partner in this ministry and will be expected to share the full range of pastoral duties as part of a comprehensive ministry team where each member’s gifts and talents will be utilized to share Christ’s mission (adapted from “Vision for an Associate Pastor” (PDF) position description). Based on current Pacifica Synod guidelines, the estimated cost for salary and benefits for two years is $166,000. If the congregation judges the addition of an associate pastor to be a success at the end of two years, these costs will have to be incorporated into the annual budget.
Renovate the parking lot behind the church to do enhance safety, improve the appearance of the parking lot, and increase the number of stalls. The estimated cost for this project is $70,000–$90,000.
Cover the Hörmann Courtyard to increase our useable space, add to the flexibility of our campus, and enable us to support additional ministries. The estimated cost for this project is $30,000–$35,000.

Updates on Fundraising for the Mission Campaign

Pledges towards the Mission Campaign were received as part of the annual stewardship campaign in October and November 2011, but members had begun to make contributions even before the campaign was authorized in May. The chart below shows contributions received in red, pledges made for 2012–2013 but not yet paid in darker pink, and the amount yet to be pledged in lighter pink. Figures are as of february 28, 2013.

Updates on Progress on Mission Campaign Projects

Associate Pastor Call Process—The Call Committee recommended Pastor Angela Freeman to the Council, and she visited the congregation in February. The congregation extended a call, Pastor Freeman accepted. She arrived in Honolulu in July and was installed in August. Summary of action by the Call Committee and the congregation.
Parking Lot Renovation—The new concrete parking lot was installed in the week before Christmas 2011 and used for Christmas Eve worship services. The parking lot was dedicated on January 28, 2012 as part of the annual congregational meeting.
