Sean D’EvelynHigh School Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Leader Sean’s nerdiness is evident even from afar. The best advice I could give a 20 year old is... take time to really know yourself and to know that you are loved just the way you are. My guilty pleasure is... games. Card games, board games, video games, tabletop role-playing games—I love them all! The one thing I want to make sure people know about LCH is... we could really use you. I have spent my whole life in the Lutheran faith, and have grown to love its tradition and the values it espouses. My faith was such a central part of my identity that I decided to attend St. Olaf College for my undergraduate education. At St. Olaf, I met my wife, Charlotte, and after college we spent a year teaching English in college. When the two of us moved to Hawaii to start graduate school, we knew we needed a new church home. Never did we think we would find a place that would fit us so well! We were very pleasantly surprised by how involved LCH is with the Reconciling in Christ movement, and were amazed by how great the choir is. Moreover, we found within LCH’s walls a community of intelligent, compassionate, and faithful people with whom we felt right at home. When I was in high school, I was blessed to have an amazing Sunday School teacher who really encouraged us to become adults in our faith. It was his model that inspired me to take on the role of a high school Sunday school teacher myself. I have now taught the high school class for more than three years. Each semester I adopt a new theme for the class, and we explore it in depth. Past themes include “Faith Goes to the Movies,” “The Hidden Parts of the Bible,” “What Does Faith Do Well?” and “Faith and Current Events.” In addition to Sunday School, I occasionally lead the youth on various events. Together we have adopted a highway, and schedule regular cleanups. In addition, we have gone ice skating, watched movies, played Dungeons and Dragons, and held lock-ins. We hope that you will join us, either as a youth participant, or as an adult volunteer.
