Joined by Bobby Igano on lap steel guitar, this group will bring their unique “Hot Club of Hulaville” experience to this event!

Summer Jazz Journey 2024 graphicRenowned pianist Ethan Capone, joined by Mark Tanouye, bass, and Abe Lagrimas Jr., drums, presents an evening of jazz classics and innovations. This must-see event will take you on an exciting musical journey, keeping your ears happy and your hearts full!

The evening begins with pūpū in the courtyard at 6:15. The concert is free, and donations are welcome.

Summer Jazz Journey Begins Sunday, June 2, at 7:00 pm

Summer Jazz Journey 2024 graphicExperimenting with the collective sound of saxophones, vibraphone, and drumset, “Vibin’ with Allen, Abe, and Noel” will take you on a new journey for your ears. The legendary musicians, Allen Won, Abe Lagrimas, Jr., and Noel Okimoto will offer you a unique experience with a feast of jazz standards and original compositions.

The evening begins with pūpū in the courtyard at 6:15. The concert is free, and donations are welcome.

Summer Jazz Journey: DeShannon Higa and Quadpod, Tues., Aug. 8, at 7:00 pm

DeShannon HigaMember of Royal Hawaiian Band member DeShannon Higa is also a bandleader and visionary. He has assembled and is currently performing with two bands of his own creation. He will share the sultry sounds of his trumpet along with his ensemble, Quadpod. This neo-bop quartet will be joined by a special guest on vocals. DeShannon’s styles of music range from jazz to Latin/salsa to modern electronica and hip hop. He resides in Honolulu with his wife, former Broadway performer, from the original cast of Miss Saigon, Rocky Brown, with whom he also performs.

Summer Jazz Journey 2023 supports local musicians and gives the greater Honolulu community a fun summer program to enjoy. Our three-concert series takes place monthly on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 6:15 pm with pūpū in the Hörmann Courtyard and continuing with the concert at 7:00 pm. Tuesday Summer Jazz concerts are free. A suggested donation of $20 is humbly requested.

String Swing bannerJoin Hawai‘i jazz masters Duane Padilla on violin, Benny Chong on ‘ukulele, and Byron Yasui on bass as they present an evening of string-based swing music. Together, they explore what might happen if French jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli and American violinist Stuff Smith accidentally met in a Waikīkī night club and were asked to jam “island style.”

Summer Jazz Journey 2023 supports local musicians and gives the greater Honolulu community a fun summer program to enjoy. Our three-concert series takes place monthly on Tuesday evenings, beginning at 6:15 pm with pūpū in the Hörmann Courtyard and continuing with the concert at 7:00 pm. Summer Jazz Journey Begins Tuesday, June 6, at 7:00 pm

Jazz is back at Lutheran Church of Honolulu, and you’re invited to enjoy all the swinging sounds of our summer lineup! Take a musical journey with us as we celebrate summer with some of Honolulu’s finest jazz musicians. Concerts begin at 7:00 pm in the Nave, and all are invited to gather for pūpū and conversation before the concert at 6:15 pm in the Hörmann Courtyard. The concerts are free, with a suggested donation of $20 for each concert.

  • Allen Won and Friends (June 6 • 7:00 pm)—Local Saxophonist Allen Won has embraced a diverse career with an eclectic performance itinerary playing with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; many of the orchestras in and around New York, including the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet, the City Opera, and the New Jersey Philharmonic; and various jazz and experimental groups, including Mario Pavone, Barbara Sfraga, Mala Waldron, Steve Bernstein. As part of our Summer Jazz series, Allen will be joined by Tim Ishii (alto saxophone), Curtis Abe (trombone), Steffan Karlsson (piano), Taylor Katase (drums), and Dean Taba (string bass) to bring you an unforgettable evening.

  • The Nalu Collective (Friday, June 24 • 7:00 pm)—The Nalu Collective is a Hawai‘i-based quartet performing unique takes on contemporary and classic hits from the genres of Jazz, R&B, Neo Soul, and World Music, featuring outstanding lead vocalist Rachel Gonzales.
  • The Alika Lyman Trio (Friday, July 22 • 7:00 pm)—This trio of talented musicians will finesse their way through straight jazz, light funk, ballads, and more. “Halfway through the song, while I’m swaying to the sweet sounds, my friend leans over and says, ‘Wow. This is what dreams are made of.’”
  • QUADPOD (Friday, August 26 • 7:00 pm)—This neo-jazz quartet continues to dazzle with their dynamic and modern sound. Led by trumpeter DeShannon Higa, they will take the listener on a musical journey of tone and texture that tantalizes the senses and cradles the soul.

Not Your Average Lutheran Christmas Concert • Friday, December 10, at 7:00 pm

Not Your Average Lutheran Christmas Concert graphic’Tis the season for live Christmas music. In this festive iteration of our new jJazz series, join us for a night of Donny Hathaway, “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” Wham!, and other festive tunes you might not expect to hear at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. Joining our LCH Jazz Trio will be local trumpet legend DeShannon Higa and a few surprise vocalists.

The concert is on Friday, December 10, at 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) with limited seating. Book your tickets now through our Eventbrite page. Proof of vaccination or a negative covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of the concert is required for entry; masks are required throughout the performance.

Free admission, suggested donation of $10 supports our music ministry.

Wearing a hat from a previous life with Celebration Vocal Jazz and Celebrity Cruises, our music director Scott Fikse will be joined by five fabulous vocalists and the LCH Jazz Combo for an evening of unforgettable music from the pop, musical theater, jazz, and rock genres.

Honolulu Vocal Jazz: Vanessa Manuel and Naomi Barrett, sopranos, Melissa Walker Glenn, alto; Daniel Henderson and Benjamin Sobel, tenors; and Scott Fikse, bass.

LCH Jazz Combo: Reid Ishikawa, piano; Alika Lyman, bass; and Jeremy Lawi, drums.

sax at sunsetSummer Jazz continues with a quartet led by our very own Reid Ishikawa and including Jeremy Lawi on drums, Alika Lyman on bass, and Allen Won on sax. This outstanding combo will play through a historical sampler of jazz music composed by some of the genre’s greats, including pieces by Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and more. The quartet will be joined by a surprise guest vocalist or two.

The concert will take place as a hybrid in-person/livestream event in the LCH Courtyard with limited seating. Attendees are encouraged to be vaccinated, and masks are required throughout the evening. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
