Summer Jazz Journey 2022

Jazz Journey graphicJazz is back at Lutheran Church of Honolulu, and you’re invited to enjoy all the swinging sounds of our summer lineup! Take a musical journey with us as we celebrate summer with some of Honolulu’s finest jazz musicians, live in the intimate outdoor setting of the Hörmann Courtyard.

  • The Nalu Collective (Friday, June 24 • 7:00 pm)—The Nalu Collective is a Hawai‘i-based quartet performing unique takes on contemporary and classic hits from the genres of Jazz, R&B, Neo Soul, and World Music, featuring outstanding lead vocalist Rachel Gonzales.
  • The Alika Lyman Trio (Friday, July 22 • 7:00 pm)—This trio of talented musicians will finesse their way through straight jazz, light funk, ballads, and more. “Halfway through the song, while I’m swaying to the sweet sounds, my friend leans over and says, ‘Wow. This is what dreams are made of.’”
  • QUADPOD (Friday, August 26 • 7:00 pm)—This neo-jazz quartet continues to dazzle with their dynamic and modern sound. Led by trumpeter DeShannon Higa, they will take the listener on a musical journey of tone and texture that tantalizes the senses and cradles the soul.

17th Annual Faith and Arts Sunday • Sunday, June 12

Members look at examples of the art work of children and adults submitted as part of 2022’s Faith and Arts Sunday

LCH celebrated its somewhat-delayed Faith and Arts Sunday on June 12. Usually held each spring, this is a time when members of the congregations recognize the many ways the arts enrich our lives and honor the artist of all ages who call LCH home.

Works displayed this year represent a wide variety of media: needle craft, paintings, poetry, prose, photography, woodworking, and more. Participating artists included young children, working adults, and retirees. Some, like members of the Writers’ Workshop, meet regularly as a group, but many work at home and share as part of this annual event.

Ash Wednesday Worship • March 2 at 7:30 pm

Ash Wednesday cross graphicThe season of Lent begins with a very special worship on Ash Wednesday. This beautiful evening service begins the Lenten season of reflection, prayer, and preparation as we hear the words from Genesis 3:19, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ashes, a sign of mourning and repentance, are placed on our foreheads as a reminder of our mortality, but the ashes are in the shape of a cross, a sign of promise, and life, and hope.

Ash Wednesday—and the whole season of Lent—calls us to reflect and remember the precious gift of life and love that God has given us in creation and community and to re-center our thoughts and spirit on what truly matters. As we gather around the communion table in worship on Ash Wednesday, we see our neighbor with the same smudged cross on her head, recall that our mortality is joined to hers forever in Christ, and remember that together we share the joy of life with all of God’s world.

In-person attendance is welcome for vaccinated individuals, and masks are required at all times. For those not attending in person, the Ash Wednesday Liturgy will be livestreamed on our streaming page and the LCH Facebook page.
