Remembering Pr. Jeff Lilley

The Lilley family with the boat Jeff builtLCH celebrated the life and ministry of Pr. Jeff Lilley on Saturday afternoon, October 19, with a spirit-filled memorial service and continued the celebration with Jeff Fest, replacing our annual LutherFest that had already been scheduled for that evening.

Dan Dennison has completed two videos telling the story of that day. The first is a video of the complete memorial service, and second tells the story the sailboat hand-crafted by Pr. Jeff (shown in the photo accompanying this article) that was brought into the Nave for the service. Another video of remembrances from the congregation, clergy, and friends is still being worked on, and a link to that video will be distributed in the eNews when it is completed.

The Lilley family has asked that memorial gifts made in honor of Pr. Jeff go to the Hawai‘i Health and Harm Reduction Center (H3RC) for their transgender program. Checks may be made out to Lutheran Church of Honolulu and placed in the offering plate or sent to the church (1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822) or made via PayPal.

LCH Moves Forward

Bridge Pastor Margrethe Shizuko Chinen KleiberSo much has changed, so quickly with Pastor Jeff’s passing. For most everyone in our LCH ‘ohana the past week has been a blur, yet the sheer amount of love shown Jean and her family and the tremendous effort that many of you contributed to prepare for Pastor Jeff’s memorial service and “Jeff Fest” were both simply astounding. Please continue keeping the Lilley family in your prayers through the grief they and we are all feeling.

The church council, in consultation with the Pacifica Synod’s Bishop Dave Nagler and Assistant to the Bishop J. P. Sabbithi, approved a covenant of bridge ministry with Rev. Margrethe Kleiber, through January 2025. Pastor Margrethe is a Godsend to our congregation. She immediately stepped in to lead service last Sunday, moments after we learned that Pastor Jeff had passed. She provided critical leadership and coordination with the synod office and other clergy as plans came together to honor Pastor Jeff’s life and support us in our grief.

During the bridge period, in the covenant with Pastor Margrethe, it is agreed we together will address the following concerns:

  • Attend to the grief of LCH members, friends, and staff at the loss of Pastor Lilley.
  • Continue planning for LCH’s 125h anniversary celebration.
  • Prepare LCH members, friends and staff for the pastoral leadership transition, including the transition to a long-term interim pastor.

Following her service as bridge minister Pastor Margrethe will return to the congregation. Mahalo Pastor Margrethe.

Meanwhile, the Pacifica Synod is searching for a regular interim minister until a new pastor accepts our call to serve LCH. Many members and friends have candidates in mind. Share any ideas you may have wtih Olivia Castro, congregation president, and she will forward them to the synod bishop and assistant bishop.

As Bishop Dave Nagler noted in his sermon on October 20 and then again during a special meeting of the LCH Council, now we individually and collectively begin the grief process. He encourages us to take the time to cry, to pray, to breathe, to talk, and to reflect. Our tasks are far from over, and it will take our entire congregation to continue making Lutheran Church of Honolulu the welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant church we all love and, like Pastor Jeff, one that is deeply loved and supported in our synod and across the ecumenical world.

Again, thanks to each and every one of you for your love and support for the Lilleys. And, thanks to Jean, Seth, and Meghann for providing the counsel needed to hold a service that honored Jeff’s life in a unique, creative, and deeply moving way. No doubt, a service just like Pastor Jeff himself would have done it.

Take care of yourself and take care of one another.

From Pastor Margrethe

Attending to Grief

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee,
when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

Psalm 61:1-2 KJV

Pastor Jeff’s death leaves a massive hole in our hearts. His life touched so many. Words can’t adequately describe the individual and communal sorrow that we share.

I am grateful for your compassionate and courageous response to Pastor Jeff’s passing. LCH leadership and members immediately sprang into action, caring for Jean, Meghann, and Seth in concrete ways and providing emotional support. Jeff’s memorial service and the Jeff-Fest would not have been possible without your love and dedication. All of you stepped up to serve despite your own grief.

Your love for Pastor Jeff consecrates this difficult time. You have taught me that:

  • To grieve together as a community is sacred.
  • To tell stories about Jeff, to laugh and cry together, is holy work.
  • To wrestle with our questions, the “whys” and “what ifs of what happened,” is faithful discipleship.

In the days, weeks, and months ahead, I invite all of us to attend to the holy work of grieving. Worship with us on All Saints Sunday as we remember and honor our ancestors in the faith, Jeff among them, acknowledging our tears while proclaiming the hope of the resurrection.

Keep all who grieve in your prayers, especially Jean Lilley and her family. Be attentive to grief in our LCH ‘ohana. Take the time to be present with one another.

Importantly, please attend to your grief. Take advantage of any spiritual or secular resources available to you. Pastor Phyllis Hörmann and I are available if you wish to call or chat with us.

If you feel that more extended grief work is needed, please take advantage of the many resources available in the community. Pastor Phyllis has compiled a short list of grief groups and counselors, which we will make available. While some have insurance to cover the costs, others may not. Please don’t let money stop you from getting the support you need. You are part of our ‘ohana. If you have questions about getting support, please contact Olivia Castro, our council president, Pastor Phyllis, or myself.

Blessings,
Pastor Margrethe

Stewardship Corner

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

Stewardship 2024 logo: kintsugi graphicAs many of you know, I was in Japan during the first half of October. I had gone not as a tourist but to visit long-standing (not old) friends, and, as usual, I took along work to do. There was the slideshow from Faith and Arts weekend to put together, I had poems posted that weekend to prepare for the LCH website, and this column had to be written. I got the first two done fairly quickly, but I could not make headway on the column.

Then I woke up Monday morning, October 14, Japan time (a bit after noon on Sunday, October 13, Hawai‘i time) to a text message telling me that Pr. Jeff had passed away. There was no hope that I would be able to write anything from thousands of miles away and without seeing my LCH ‘ohana.

I returned from Japan Wednesday morning, went to choir practice Thursday evening, participated in Pr. Jeff’s memorial service on Saturday and worship on Sunday morning, and by Monday I finally had an idea for what to write. It wasn’t an original idea—in fact, it’s the same idea the Cindy wrote about in October—but I think it’s the right idea for us at this time. As she wrote last month, “God wants us to ‘rejoice,’ ‘pray,’ and ‘give thanks’ because it’s good for us to do those things.” With this understanding, I started a little list.

I rejoice that Jeff Lilley was our pastor for the last 17 years. I rejoice that LCH is a congregation that welcomes all. I rejoice that we proclaim the abundant love of God for all of humanity and all creation. I rejoice that our congregation values the arts. I rejoice that I am part of this community of faith.

I pray for Pr. Jeff’s family, friends, and colleagues as the grieve his passing. I pray for Pr. Margrethe and the leaders of our congregation as they figure out the next steps that will help us fulfill the ministry God has entrusted to us, not only now but into the future. I pray for our nation as we choose a new president.

I give thanks that, as Pr. Jeff reminded us every week, God has promised to be with us as we journey through grief. I give thanks for all the members of the LCH ‘ohana who travelled to be with us as we celebrated Pr. Jeff’s life. I give thanks for the leaders and congregations of the Pacifica Synod who journey with us. I give thanks for all the talented people of this congregation who share their gifts to enrich our worship and our life together.

Maybe some of the things I wrote would be on your list too, but I’m sure your list is different in many ways as well. And that kind of diversity is the way God’s world is.

In just a few weeks we enter into our church’s 125th anniversary year. The grief we feel from the passing of Pr. Jeff will certainly lead to a different celebration from the one we imagined a few weeks ago, but we have a lot to rejoice about and much to give thanks for. We know that God still has a mission for us. I pray that God will lead each one of us as we recommit ourselves to that mission.

First Half of Annual Meeting

Sunday, November 24, 11:15 am • Isenberg Hall

Each year, congregational members gather as a community to tend to important matters of business and ministry. These include nominating leadership, passing a budget, receiving reports, and discussing our mission objectives. At LCH, we divide our annual meeting into two halves.

At the November 24 meeting the key agenda items will be:

  • First vote on the revised LCH Constitution (sent in the October 23 eNews and available for download). A majority in favor at this meeting will lead to a second vote in January. Anyone who has questions about the Constitution is invited to stay after the worship service on November 17 for a question-and-answer session.
  • Elect Congregational Council members to take office in January
  • Present the proposed 2025 budget
  • Conduct other business that may need to be transacted.

At the January 26 second half, the main business items will be approving a final budget for the new year and a final vote on the constitution, for which a two-thirds majority is required.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings, but only members in good standing may vote. Please plan to attend!

We’ll aim to open the buffet line at 4:00 pm, so that we have time to enjoy God’s bounty with each other before clean-up. Come a little early to help set up. There will be sign-up sheets available on the Sundays in November so we know how many to plan for.

Please join us for a time to share our gratitude for the bounties of God’s table.

The Beckerath Organ—50 and Beyond!

Pipes for the organ renovationsAs we continue our fundraising for the Beckerath Organ cleaning and additions, we are grateful for donations already received and hopeful that you will find a place for your gift. We joyfully celebrate having raised $42,000 in gifts and pledges towards our goal of $60,000. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity.

We are also beginning our “Support a Pipe” Campaign to continue to raise funds. We are recommending two options, but every gift will be honored:

  • Trumpet Stop—a $500 per pipe gift ($250 to organ fund/$250 to Mission)
  • Salicional Stop—a $300 per pipe gift ($150 to organ fund/$150 to Mission)
There are 32 trumpet pipes being built and voiced now. And there are 56 salicional pipes being constructed and voiced. That gives us a total of 88 pipes to purchase in honor of or memory of a loved one. This campaign and all gifts will be commemorated on a plaque placed near the organ.

Please join us in the faithful stewardship of this wonderful instrument to have it thoroughly cleaned and enhanced by these two “new” sounds.

Gifts can be made on the Organ Fund PayPal Donation page.

Save on Your Taxes!

For individuals taking required distributions from a retirement account, under the new tax law, if you give cash or check donations from your personal funds, you will be taxed on them and you may not be able to take the deduction. There are two ways to avoid this.

  1. Donate directly to LCH from your IRA. If you take money directly from your IRA to give to LCH, this increases your income and may increase your tax bracket. You may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Give directly by telling your IRA provider to donate to the church—the account representative will do this easily.
  2. Give appreciated stock directly to LCH. If you sell stock and then donate, it increases your tax bracket, and you may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Instruct your broker to donate directly to LCH.
