From Pastor Jeff
As we come to the later days of the season of Epiphany—a season of revealing, of realization, of discovery—we find ourselves on the cusp of the next season of our liturgical lives: Lent. Over the centuries, this season has had many monikers, some of which I have listed above. Some of the oldest names are descriptive of the forty days before Easter Sunday (minus the Sundays if you are counting) set aside for prayer, almsgiving, and repentance. In the early church, those seeking to become disciples would spend this time preparing themselves physically and spiritually to be received in Baptism. Fasting, prayer, worship, giving to the poor, and religious instruction were carried out prior to Baptism during Easter Vigil or Easter Day. This emphasized the understanding that Baptism led the new person of faith not only into a community of love but also into a transformed life characterized by devotion to God and care for one’s neighbor. But the season was not just for those new to the faith. The whole community was called to take seriously their vows to God and to their community of faith and renew that commitment through repentance, prayer, and fasting. On Easter eve at midnight, the fast was broken, water poured over the heads of those seeking baptism, and a rejoicing community celebrated the light and majesty of Easter.
The other names for Lent are based on the lengthening of days that occur just as Lent is unfolding. The Old English word “lencten” (for “spring”) is shortened in modern English to “Lent.” Particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, the shorter days of winter soon give way to more hours of daylight, warmer temperatures, and arguably happier attitudes. Even in Hawai‘i, the winter rains fall less frequently and the sun begins to intensify. Gardeners look forward to getting out into the dirt to plant, and the rest of us are looking forward to just getting out! While the natural season draws us out, the liturgical season also draws us in. We are called to listen more intently to God and to look more closely at who we are becoming and how we are living with our neighbor. For some Lent is a call to return to the community of faith from whom we have drifted away; for others, it is a call to renew a life in the Lord. As the days stretch longer and longer, we too are stretched, reshaped, healed, and renewed in preparation for the great feast of Easter.
LCH’s Lenten theme, “For the Healing of the World,” reflects the many ways we, and our world, are being stretched and stand in need of healing. As the days grow longer, so do the hurts of the world and her people. This morning’s news (February 13) counted over 35,000 deaths as a result of the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria. By the time you read this, that figure will likely double. The suffering and hurt there are unimaginable! As the world responds to this crisis, the War in Ukraine is compounded by a harsh winter and dwindling supplies. Economic meltdown in many nations is forcing many people into poverty and desperation. During our Lenten worship, together with our siblings around the world, we will lift up our prayers, psalms, voices of hope, hands, and help as we worship and fellowship each Wednesday.
Once again, you are invited to a light soup/salad supper beginning at 6:00 pm followed by Holden Evening Prayer at 7:00 pm. During worship, you will hear voices from our community as they reflect on the scriptures chosen for each week’s focus and share in the beauty of evening prayer with friends and strangers.
May these lengthening days bring blessing, renewal, hope, and love as we journey through Lent “For the Healing of the World.”
Blessings,
Pr. Jeff
Earthquake Response
The disastrous earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has resulted in over 35,000 deaths and countless injuries. For many, life will never be the same. Whole communities were wiped out in an instant when the quake struck and as a result of aftershocks. As part of our ongoing commitment to help those is need, the ELCA is sending aid and funds to help with the relief efforts. Rather than donate to LCH and have those funds forwarded to the ELCA, it is much more efficient to send your donations directly. If you would like to help support those relief efforts with an online donation, go to www.elca.org and follow the link currently on the first page of the website or use this direct link.
If you would like to donate by mail, make checks payable to “Lutheran Disaster Response,” write “Middle East Crisis” on your check’s memo line, and send it to:
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
P.O. Box 1809
Merrifield, VA 22116-8009
The ELCA Disaster Relief fund is a very safe alternative for these kinds of donations. They are highly rated by Charity Navigator and Guidestar!

Healing a Broken World: Renewing Community
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. (Colossian 3:12–14, NRSV)
In February’s Stewardship Corner, Pam Buckley introduced us to the Danish concept of hygge or “creating warmth, connection, and wellbeing,” as well as the Norwegian term, hugga meaning “to console or to comfort, or in English, a hug.” At the most recent Food for Thought gatherings, I have experienced what Pam went on to describe as “a calm, comfortable time with people you love, a complete absence of any frustrations or anything emotionally overwhelming.” And yes, we also enjoyed good food and drinks!
Many of our ‘ohana seem to be craving in-person time with others—a sense of community where they can share joys and sorrows, exhilaration and laughter, encouragement and support, and hugs of consolation and comfort. Maybe you have enjoyed a sense of community as we worship together or share coffee in the courtyard or in one of the other gatherings that happen through the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. Or maybe that has become impossible for you to do. If so, know that we miss you! And, for those who are able to gather, there are people you miss and wonder about. Those of us who are able to gather in person miss seeing those who cannot. LCH is not the same without all the members of our ‘ohana.
During March, we continue our focus on renewing community. For me, 2022 was a year of renewal, reconnection, and healing. A friend with whom I had a falling out reached out to me via Facebook, and that resulted in shared time on the Big Island, including the chance for reconciliation and amazing grace. I have reconnected with old school friends, youth group friends, as well as other mainland friends. The various gatherings have included shared meals around a table or conversations over a cup of coffee. A couple of these reconnections came about because I called/emailed/messaged these people to suggest we get together.
I am slowly learning to act sooner rather than later when someone’s name comes to mind—to seize the day or the opportunity to pick up the phone, email, text, or send a card to this person right then to say, “Hi! How are you doing? I’ve missed you!” If this person comes to mind at an inopportune moment, I try to write myself a note to follow up when I can.
Many of our LCH meetings and other gatherings begin with a time for people to “check in,” to share the highs and lows of what’s happening in their life. This offers the group a way to care for as well as celebrate with one another. But what about the people we are missing? Is there someone who has come to your mind that you miss? Seize the opportunity to reach out to them! Seize the opportunity to tell them that they’re missed! Let us all take advantage of opportunities we have to contact those we miss! Is there someone who used to come to one of the groups you participate in (Bible study, Writers Workshop, etc.) who has been absent in recent months? Is there someone you miss seeing Sunday mornings? Don’t wait to ask pastor about the person! Instead, take action yourself! We are all called to care for one another as a community in Christ.
Maybe you’d like to send a card to someone you miss. The Stewardship Committee has cards for this very purpose; just ask Phyllis for one (or more) after church. Let us work together using our unique and varied gifts to care for, renew, and foster healing in our extended ‘ohana. Let’s be creative as we work to provide an atmosphere of warmth, connection, well-being, and aloha for all, and let’s give hugs to those in need of comfort and consolation.

P.S. If you know of people in the church who have moved and have a new address, email, and/or phone number, please ask them to call (808-941-2566) or email (lch@lchwelcome.org) Brenda in the office and update their contact information.
Angel Network In-Gathering
LCH is not collecting donations for Angel Network Charities until further notice. However, Angel Network is accepting donations at the Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church location in east O‘ahu: 5339 Kalaniana‘ole Highway, Honolulu 96821.
For those who are able and interested in donating, they accept donations on Thursdays and Fridays, from 8:30 am to noon. They will only accept packaged, unopened dry goods (e.g. cereal, flour, sugar, pasta, etc.) and canned goods.
Angel Network requires that donating drivers identify themselves and remain in their vehicle. Volunteers will offload donation items from your vehicle with protective gloves. Over 2,500 individuals are served monthly through this program. Mahalo for your generosity and support.

Lenten Wednesdays: Healing a Broken World
Join us mid-week during Lent as we share Holden Evening Prayer. The sung prayer service begins at 7:00 pm preceded by a soup-and-salad supper at 6:00 pm in the church courtyard. Virtual Coffee Talk with Pastor Jeff
Sunday, March 5, 11:30 am • Via Zoom Meeting
Virtual Coffee Hour will be held at 11:30 am on the first Sunday of each month instead of weekly. Hope you can join us!
You are invited to join with your LCH ‘ohana on the first Sundays for a virtual coffee talk following online worship. This discussion time will be via Zoom Meeting, and will run for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
In order to avoid “Zoom bombing” (surprise visits from unsavory folks), you will need to contact Pastor Jeff, via email at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org, for a meeting number and password to log into the meeting. While these are not ideal gathering circumstances, we can at least enjoy a chance to commune together briefly.

At baptism we promise to “place in [your child’s] hands the Holy Scripture and provide for their education in the Christian Faith.” In confirmation class we study scripture, the Reformation, and Christian history, but we are more interested in helping young people develop as persons of faith.
Please contact Pastor Jeff at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org for more information.
IHS Brown Bag Meal Prep
LCH continues our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless during these difficult times. Although covid restrictions in the community have relaxed, we continue to practice the requirements of social distancing, masks, sanitizing, etc. in this ministry. Therefore, only a small group will be asked to make sandwiches, and those individuals will be contacted directly by phone or email. We will keep you updated about when we can be back to our regular group. Thank you for your patience as we navigate our way through the uncertainty.

We warmly invite all people in all places of faith and life to Compline. Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund
The church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.
Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
