From Pastor Jeff

While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.–Mathew 17:5–8

The transfiguration story is a familiar and sometimes off-putting story for many of us. Jesus calls some of disciples to go to a high place where he experiences a metamorphosis of sorts. His face and clothes suddenly shine brightly, and the disciples see him speaking to Moses and Elijah. The disciples throw themselves to the ground in an ecclesiastical “duck and cover” drill. Afraid, disoriented, and shaken by the amazing sight they just witnessed, Jesus’ disciples might have been surprised by his curt and seemingly urgent response, “Get up and do not be afraid.” Jesus seems to have no patience for their fear and seems to expect them to simply get over it and get on with it. But perhaps fear didn’t leave them. A short paragraph later, a man brings his epileptic son to Jesus for healing. He reports that when he brought the boy to Jesus’ disciples “they could do nothing.” Are the disciples still shaken by the majesty of what they saw on the mountain or cowed by their own comparative insignificance. We don’t really know. Jesus says “Get up and don’t be afraid!” But do they; could we?

transfiguration graphicA wise friend once told me, “Sometimes when you fall down, just sit for a while. You might be surprised what you will learn.” I tend to be the jump-up-right-away-look-and-see-if-anybody-is-laughing type of person. Tending to my hurts and wounds, or even assessing possible damage, used to seem like a waste of time. “Just get up” was my advice to myself. But as I have watched the pain and suffering of the world, of the environment, and of people of faith these past few years, I am beginning to see things a bit differently. Sometimes we just need to stay down, sit with our hurt for a while, and find our way back to our feet at a healthy pace. Our rush to “get on with it” may not serve body or soul very well.

Western culture, and particularly U.S. culture, demands immediate solutions already manufactured for every problem. Every disease is promised a pill, every sadness a solution, every shortcoming an easy fix. We have Botox™ to fill our wrinkles and online dating to mend our broken hearts. But generational hurts like racism and climate change are poor candidates for quick-fix solutions. What we really need is someone who will join us on the ground while we sit with our pain, listen to our story, and remind us again and again that we are loved. We don’t always have to rush to a standing posture that pretends the hurt is not real, or lasting, or overwhelming—sometimes it is. But we do not have be alone in our suffering, our anxiety, or our pain; we can share it.

We gather as a church in part because we know that Christ has chosen to sit with us, abide with us in our humanness. One of the biblical Greek words for abiding means literally “to pitch tent.” In Jesus, God has pitched tent with us in every way. But Christ also calls us to sit with one another, care for one another, and share one another’s burdens. We may not have ready-manufactured solutions, but we have each other. We may not know all the answers, but we are able to help each other ask better questions. We may not have instant solutions for climate change, racism, or world hunger, but we are bound to each other and to the world in such way that we will commit our very lives to transformative justice and hope.

When we have sat long enough in the company of the beloved, we finally begin to see that we too are beloved, and we are able to put our fears aside and begin the healing of an epileptic boy, or a broken world, or a hopeless nation. Perhaps the words of Jesus in the transfiguration story are less strident than I imagine. “Get up,” Jesus says, “Do not be afraid, for I am with you always to the end of your days.” And we can get up, and we must, for we are beloved of Christ, and we live in a grace that transforms us even now. That is the beauty of being God’s community nested in God’s world. We are not left alone in in our pain or in our joy, we join together with all creation in the great ministry of life.

Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

Stewardship Corner

Grateful Stewards of God’s Love

Stewardship 2021 logoFor the last two years, we have been exploring the theme “Stewards of God’s Love.” We began by thinking about how God’s love comes down to us and works in us, and more recently we have seen how we move that love out into the world and share it with our neighbors, both near and far. As our stewardship year comes to a close, those of us on the LCH stewardship team turn our focus to Gratitude.

Far too often, reflecting on gratitude is reduced to a single time of year—Thanksgiving in the US. But as citizens of the world, we understand reflections of gratitude are observed throughout the calendar year, and as we grow spiritually, we realize that we do better when gratitude is approached as a practice, preferably something daily and habitual. Personally, I’m fond of saying “the attitude is gratitude.”

But gratitude is not just an attitude. It’s the foundation that supports everything we experience. It keeps us centered, grounded, focused, humble, and thankful. It lets us acknowledge the works and gifts of others, as well as thank the Creator for the abundance, which is life itself.

For myself, I’m deeply grateful for this LCH ‘ohana for a multitude of reasons. The ways intentions are harnessed and efforts come to fruition in meaningful, sensitive, artistic, and mindful ways, and they are reflected in the various programs our church offers.

LCH embodies a can-do attitude and managed to remain in the light, during sustained and, yes, unprecedented times. For more than two and a half years into a global pandemic (that has shifted, morphed, and forever changed every person who’s been on this journey) our congregation never threw in the towel or gave up. Instead, we found new, dynamic, and inclusive ways to bring the Word, music, and the sense of community to all, locally and abroad.

I’m grateful for the unshakable foundation of faith married with the spirit of service that’s present. Shifting to a digital format to ensured people enriched their faith practices, LCH provided learning opportunities to those able to help in this process. We continue to hold weekly Bible studies, the monthly writers’ workshop, the Mary Magdalene society meetings, as well as producing diverse streamed/hybrid musical concerts, and we still prepare food for the houseless at IHS.

I know firsthand that people give because they feel supported! To be a part of LCH, to share the journey, and build our faith, is something I will always be grateful for!

But that’s enough from me. Over the past few weeks, members of the team asked various members of our congregation what they’re grateful for. This small sampling is by no means a complete list. It is a wonderful snapshot of people’s experiences and of what sparks gratitude.

  • Cathy B—At the end of last year, I said “yes” when Pr. Phyllis asked if I’d be willing to serve on the Council and “yes” when Steve Miller asked me to serve on the Finance Committee. One meeting in, I was kicking myself: “you’re an introvert, you’re not an accountant or business/finance person, what were you thinking!” Looking back, however, I am truly thankful that I took the plunge. What a blessing to be able to grow, to work with people I already knew and others new to me, and to see for myself all that Pr. Jeff, Pr. Bree, Brenda, and so many others in our midst do to enable God’s work in our congregation and beyond.
  • Stan B is grateful for Cathy.
  • Mary F states “I am grateful for all my families—church family, work family, biological family, and chosen family. In a time of societal and social turmoil, I am grateful for those family environments where I can love, celebrate, mourn, and question. In the coming year, I want to make sure I share my gratitude with each of my families.”
  • Jerome expressed gratitude for the online services, which got better over time.
  • Roy Helms is grateful that after a long process and search for a music director we now have a new music director. He also spoke of the new people brought in by live-streamed services.
  • JP—“I’ve had a lot of medical issues this past year, but through all of my problems, Kathryn has been by my side, helping me. I’m very grateful for her!”
  • Linda Muller—“I am living a ‘five loaves and two fish’ life. When the 2-year project that brought me to Hawai‘i ended I was to return “home.” Yet 3 years later I am still here living the aloha! I trust (not an easy attribute for me) in the Lord to manage this miracle for me daily. He encourages various relationships and situations for growth, sometimes gently, sometimes not. I’ve rediscovered skills and joys I let go rusty like making candy sleighs or pūpū. Embracing others in a variety of ways—attending concerts, food donations, sending cards, using photos, sitting together, noticing others and just showing up—is the hug and love that holds us even closer to God and His people.”
  • Sammie is thankful for a new school.
  • And her mom, Steph, is grateful for her and everyone’s ability to adapt to constant change, while being strengthened by things that remained stable or constant.
  • Susan is grateful for connections.
  • Cindy S is grateful for LCH offering her opportunities to ease back into society after so many months of not socializing with anyone. Whether by IHS sandwich making, Bible study, concerts, Compline, Sunday church, and much more!
  • Paula Wheeler—“I am most grateful for water. How wonderful and essential it is to have clean water to drink, cook with, bathe, wash, swim in, and to water my plants. Water is a necessity but also a luxury that I enjoy every day. Thank God for surrounding us with water.”
  • Nan W expresses gratitude for the support she’s felt from the community as she cares for Chuck. She’s also glad to return to in-person worship.

As our second year with the theme “Stewards of God’s Love” draws to a close, we pray that you too feel blessed to be members of this congregation and—more importantly—recipients of God’s love. We encourage you to consider these blessings and how you will express your gratitude for them.

Confirmation is Starting!

confirmation graphicIs your youth in 6th grade or higher and has not yet had confirmation instruction? You are invited to an informational meeting following worship on Sunday, October 2, in the Rainbow Room (at the top of the ramp from the courtyard.) Confirmation is a voluntary two-year program for young people entering 6th grade through high school. The intent of the program is to help young people connect more deeply with their faith and with each other.

St. Francis graphicPet Blessing Service in Celebration of the Feast of St. Francis

Sunday, October 2, at 10:00 am

Join us Sunday, October 2, for a special worship service to bless any of your furry friends and to remember dear pets who have died. Bring your pet or a photo or memento of your pet to church. For those worshipping online, email a photo of your pet, along with the name of your pet, to pr.bree@LCHwelcome.org. The service will be held in commemoration of Francis of Assisi, who is widely regarded as the patron saint of animals and ecology. This Sunday worship service will include a “pet-free zone” near the choir for those who have allergies or who appreciate space from animals. We will have water dishes in the courtyard. Join the fun and probably a bit of chaos!

Godly Play Sunday School Is Back!

Sunday School graphicSince LCH services are now hybrid, we are presenting a hybrid in-person/online version of Godly Play.

The in-person part will take place in Isenberg Hall at 9:00 am and will follow the same guidelines as LCH in-person worship. Each Saturday the link for the online meeting will be sent to all who need to join from their home. The online meeting will be shorter, just covering the story. Contact the LCH office if you wish to be added to the invitation list.

This class is geared for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. All are welcome!

Below is the schedule of Godly Play stories for October:

  • 10/2—Francis of Assisi object box
  • 10/9—The Story of Joseph
  • 10/16—The Story of Moses
  • 10/23—The 10 Best Ways
  • 10/30—Martin Luther object box

Sunday, October 2, 11:30 am • Via Zoom Meeting

coffee graphicBeginning October 2, the Virtual Coffee Hour will only be held at 11:30 am on the first Sunday of each month instead of weekly. Hope you can join us!

You are invited to join with your LCH ‘ohana on the first Sundays for a virtual coffee talk following online worship. This discussion time will be via Zoom Meeting, and will run for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

In order to avoid “Zoom bombing” (surprise visits from unsavory folks), you will need to contact Pastor Jeff, via email at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org, for a meeting number and password to log into the meeting. While these are not ideal gathering circumstances, we can at least enjoy a chance to commune together briefly.

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
