From Pastor Jeff
A Season of Thanksgiving
November is a time for thanksgiving. For many of us, plans to be together with family friends have once again been cancelled or modified due to covid-19. Although our plans may have changed, there is still room and need for giving thanks, to each other and to God who loves and tends us through even our most challenging moments.
Gratitude is an art quickly lost when the society in which we live turns inward on itself. Several authors and social commentators have rightly focused on the growing cancer of narcissism in U.S. culture. They note that an unwavering focus on one’s own needs and wants to the exclusion of everything leads to a host of social ills. When humans cease to see themselves as interdependent parts of a larger circle of life, they excuse themselves not only from attending to the needs of others but from gratitude itself. Why show gratitude for something you have convinced yourself you automatically and indisputably deserve?
God has gifted us with a wonderful antidote to narcissism and selfishness—we call it God’s grace. Martin Luther once posited that God’s grace brings ultimate freedom from the tyranny of working out one’s own salvation through good works. Instead of enslaving ourselves to good works to earn God’s favor, God showers us with grace that frees us to live lives in service to our neighbor as a response of gratitude for God’s immeasurable love. In other words, grace engenders gratitude not only as a temporary feeling, but as the very source and pattern of daily life.
To be sure, gratitude can sometimes be hard to practice. Many of us have been challenged in our work, relationships, and even our faith these past 18 months or more. Coupled with a culture of criticism, disinformation, and doomsday thinking, it can be hard to discern God’s grace around us or God’s presence in our midst. I know some of you are struggling with online worship, and some have simply chosen not to participate at all. I wish it could have been different or that there was a different way to bring you worship, but we have worked hard to make our worship as joyful as possible. In the next weeks, we will start moving toward in-person worship. In the meantime, I hope you will make the effort to join us online for worship and fellowship.
There is a lot going on at LCH for which we are grateful. We have voted to call Brianna Lloyd for a one-year, part-time pastoral call focusing on care of the earth and sustainability. We are looking for new ways to expand worship and outreach to our community, and we are looking to the future of our congregation and ministry. We give thanks that we are able to continue outreach to IHS and many other social programs due to your financial faithfulness and the hard work of those volunteers willing to step up in these difficult days.
November is often called the season of gratitude. But gratitude is more than a season, it is a way of life inspired by God’s never-ending love for us, for creation, and for life itself. May we live lives of gratitude and grace forever.
May God bless us and keep us!
Pr. Jeff

Mahalo for Give Aloha Donations!
The Give Aloha organization extends their congratulations to LCH! “Your success in Foodland’s Give Aloha 2021 program has resulted in a top 100 finish!” LCH donations totaled $2,341.00, resulting in matching gifts of $504.66, and a grand total of $2,845.66 for LCH and LCH programs. Mahalo for your generosity!
Committing Ourselves as Stewards of God’s Grace
Greetings from your Stewardship Team!
Though 2021 has been yet another year filled with challenges, it has been wonderful to see how everyone has come together sharing their diverse talents and time so that our LCH ‘ohana could continue to grow and prosper. Members have used their technical expertise to deliver wonderful worship and music to our homes (both here in Hawai‘i and across the nation and even the world). Council, other congregational leaders, and committees have continued to meet regularly via Zoom. Others have come together in small groups to continue our ministry to IHS by shopping, making sandwiches, packing lunches, and delivering them. Still others provide learning opportunities via the Adult Forum, Godly Play, and Bible Study. People have stayed connected with their interest groups also via Zoom. And there are hopeful conversations about how and when we might gather again in person.
How quickly this year seems to have gone by. Here we are already in November, LutherFest has come and gone, and we have sent out commitment packets. In those packets we asked you to consider the blessings you have received throughout the past year and to express your thanks for those blessings by making commitments of time, talent, and treasure for the upcoming year.
By now you should have received your commitment packet in the mail (or by email if you live outside Hawai‘i). Please contact the office by phone or email if you have not received one. We will make sure to send one out to you. You can also go to the LCH website, locate the Stewardship 2021 page under the stewardship tab, and click on the link for the commitment materials at the bottom of the page.
We look forward to hearing how you might stretch in new ways as you give thanks to God for blessings received and continue to use your time, talents, and treasure. Taken collectively, the commitments of the time and diverse talents we all bring enable us as individuals and as a congregation to grow spiritually, broaden our community outreach and in-reach, care for the earth, grow our congregation in various ways, and expand our music and arts activities. All of this moves us forward in our mission:
Welcoming to all
Worshipping, growing, and serving
Christ’s community.
We ask you to complete the commitment form you have received and return it to the church via regular mail or email, using the email address included in the letter. We will dedicate our commitments during worship on November 21.
Thank you for your stewardship!
Your Stewardship Team: Peggy Anderson, Pam Buckley, Willow Chang, Phyllis Hörmann, Barbara Poole-Street, Bill Potter
First Mondays: Bold and Brassy
While the modern brass quintet has only been around since the 1940s, a wealth of compositions has developed, ranging from the obvious bold and energetic works that horns are known for to the more tender and subtle repertoire these instruments are beautifully capable of playing. The stellar ensemble of DeShannon Higa (trumpet), Casey Tamanaha (trumpet), Marie Lickwar (horn), Jason Byerlotzer (trombone), and T.J. Ricer (tuba) will present an evening of outstanding music for brass quintet featuring both “classical” works and popular songs on the lighter side.
Selections include
- Galliard Battaglia: Samuel Scheidt (1587–1654)
- Three Pieces: Ludwig Mauer (1789–1878)
- Renaissance Dances: Tielman Susato (1500–1561)
- Sheep May Safely Graze Quintet: J.S. Bach (1685–1750)
- Brass quintet: Michael Kamen (1948–2003)
- White Rose Elegy: Caleb Hudson (b. 1988)
- Puttin on the Ritz: Irving Berlin (1888–1989)
- Nightingale Sang on Berkeley Square: Manning Sherwin (1902–1974)
The concert will be livestreamed on our streaming page and the LCH Facebook page and then archived on the LCH Facebook page
Leadership Roundtable
Tuesday, November 2, 6:30 pm • Via Zoom Meeting
Committee chairs and team leaders, please plan to gather for a short (45 minute) meeting. This month’s meeting will be conducted via the Zoom online meeting platform. Please refer to your email for the Zoom Meeting details. This is an opportunity for us to sit down together and share information on what is happening with all the ministries at LCH. If you are a committee or team leader, you will receive an email from Pastor Jeff, via Zoom Meeting, regarding login information. Please be prepared to share a little information on your activities with the group. Mahalo!
Book of Faith Bible Study
Thursdays, 10:00–11:45 am • Via Zoom Meeting
The Book of Faith Bible Study meets on Thursday mornings via the Zoom online meeting platform for the duration of the pandemic. All are welcome to join this lively discussion of the Biblical texts, relevant current events, and historical foundations. Please contact Pastor Jeff at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org to receive an invitation to the next Zoom Bible study discussion.
Restorative Yoga
Thursdays, November 4, 11, 18, and 25, at 6:00 pm • Via Zoom Meeting
Explore the restorative and ancient practice of yoga, led by LCH member Willow Chang. As a yoga practitioner for over 30 years, Willow shares the joy, wonder, and enthusiasm of a beginner. She emphasizes the origins, cultural context, and safe practice of yoga for all. In this 4-week session, she’ll share various aspects of yoga, from pranayama (breathing exercises) and yogic philosophy (ahimsa), to poses, referred to as asanas.
Join for one, two, or all four sessions from the safety of your own shelter-in-place. These unique classes also provide an opportunity to answer your questions about yoga practice and form. You don’t need yoga pants, previous experience, youth, flexibility, or any real-life experience in India to learn about yoga. Bring your amazing self to be in wonder of your abilities! Please contact Willow Chang (willowchang@hotmail.com) to be included in the weekly Zoom meeting invitation. Let’s learn and find a new center, together!
Angel Network In-Gathering
LCH is not collecting donations for Angel Network Charities until further notice. However, Angel Network is accepting donations at the Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church location in east O‘ahu: 5339 Kalaniana‘ole Highway, Honolulu 96821.
For those who are able and interested in donating, they accept donations on Thursdays and Fridays, from 8:30 am to noon. They will only accept packaged, unopened dry goods (e.g. cereal, flour, sugar, pasta, etc.) and canned goods.
Angel Network requires that donating drivers identify themselves and remain in their vehicle. Volunteers will offload donation items from your vehicle with protective gloves. Over 2,500 individuals are served monthly through this program. Mahalo for your generosity and support.

We will have Sunday school via a Zoom meeting each Sunday before service at 9:00 am. This class is geared for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. A story is followed by a craft which we can make together. Each Saturday the link for the meeting will be sent to all who want to join. Contact the LCH office if you wish to be added to the invitation list. All are welcome!
Below is the schedule of Godly Play stories for November:
- 11/7—The Story of Ruth
- 11/14—The Story of King David
- 11/21—The Story of the Prophet Isaiah
- 11/28—The Circle of the Church Year/Advent I (Prophets)
Adult Forum

All are welcome to join the Adult Forum Zoom meetings, live Sunday mornings. Participation in Adult Forum via Zoom works best if you download the free Zoom app beforehand. You may need to enable your microphone and video capabilities. If you are not already on this list for the Adult Forum, please contact Dr. Stephen Miller at stevedmiller.sm@gmail.com to receive an invitation to join the next Zoom Adult Forum discussion.
Virtual Coffee Talk with Pastor Jeff
Online Coffee Talk, Sundays, 11:15 am • Via Zoom Meeting
You are invited to join with your LCH ‘ohana on Sundays for a virtual coffee talk following online worship. This discussion time will be via Zoom Meeting, and will run for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
In order to avoid “Zoom bombing” (surprise visits from unsavory folks), you will need to contact Pastor Jeff, via email at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org, for a meeting number and password to log into the meeting. While these are not ideal gathering circumstances, we can at least enjoy a chance to commune together briefly.
Compline
Sundays, November 7 and 21, at 7:30 pm • Via Livestream Broadcast
We warmly invite all people in all places of faith and life to Compline. Offered on the first and third Sunday this month, this beautiful candle-lit service is a meditative experience of a cappella singing and chanting to commemorate the day’s end. This month, November 1 will feature Women’s Compline. November 15 compline will be led by members of the LCH Men’s Schola. Musical selections include Gregorian chant, Taizé chant, Renaissance polyphony, and more.
Compline will be livestreamed on our streaming page and the LCH Facebook page and then archived on the LCH Facebook page.
Mary Magdalene Society Potluck and Game Night
Saturday, November 13, at 6:00 pm • Hörmann Courtyard
WWith the improved covid-19 situation in Honolulu, we invite LGBTQI members and friends of LCH to gather in the Courtyard for potluck and game night. This event is open to fully-vaccinated individuals, and advanced reservations (with contact tracing information and proof of vaccination) are required.
Experience tells us that the covid situation can change unexpectedly, so a final decision about meeting in-person will be made on Wednesday, November 10. If we are not able to meet in-person, we will shift to a virtual happy hour at 5:00 pm on November 13.
Those who are already on the Mary Magdalene mailing list, an email with directions for making reservations and submitting proof of vaccination will be distributed about a week in advance. If you don’t receive your invitation, have questions, or want to be added to the mailing list, please contact Bill Potter, group facilitator, at bill.potter808@gmail.com.
LCH Women’s Book Club
Monday, November 15, 10:00 am • Via Zoom Meeting
LCH Women’s Book Club will meet via Zoom online meeting. The group will discuss Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay. Connecting to Zoom meeting works best if you download the free Zoom app beforehand. You may need to enable your microphone and video capabilities. If you are not already on the Book Club list, please contact Juditha Murashige at jcmurashige@earthlink.net to receive an invitation to join the next Zoom online Book Club meeting. All are welcome.
Writers’ Workshop
Tuesday, November 16, 4:30 pm • Via Zoom Meeting
Writers’ Workshop will meet via Zoom since restrictions on group meetings at LCH are still in effect. All are welcome! If you would like to participate, please contact Peter Flachsbart at pflachsbart@gmail.com for information on how to connect remotely.
IHS Brown Bag Meal Prep
LCH continues our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless during these difficult times. Although stay-at-home orders may have relaxed a bit, we anticipate that all the requirements of social distancing, masks, sanitizing, etc. will still be in force. Therefore, only a small group will be asked to make sandwiches, and those individuals will be contacted directly by phone or email. We will keep you updated about when we can be back to our regular group. Thank you for your patience as we navigate our way through the uncertainty.
Food for Thought
Saturday, November 20, at 5:30 pm • Via Zoom Meeting
Food for Thought will meet on Saturday, November 20. Due to continued COVID cases, we will again be meeting virtually. An invite will be sent out. Anyone who is newly interested in joining the group, please contact the office at lch@LCHwelcome.org and provide an email address.
First Half of Annual Meeting
Sunday, November 21, 11:00 AM • Via Zoom Meeting
Each year, congregational members gather as a community to tend to important matters of business and ministry. These include nominating leadership, passing a budget, receiving reports, and discussing our mission objectives. At LCH, we divide our annual meeting into two halves. This year’s meeting will be conducted via Zoom meeting. In November we’ll elect Congregational Council members to take office in January, review the draft budget, and conduct other business that may need to be transacted. In January, the main business is approving a final budget for the new year. All are welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings, but only members in good standing may vote. Please plan to attend!
In order to avoid “Zoom bombing” (surprise visits from unsavory folks), you will need to contact Pastor Jeff, via email, pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org for a meeting number and password to log into the meeting.
Bach and Prayer Thanksgiving Eve Service
Wednesday, November 24, at 7:00 pm • Hybrid livestream and in-person
All are welcome to participate in our new monthly event at LCH, “Bach and Prayer.” Join us for this quiet prayer service on Thanksgiving, Eve, November 24. Bach and Prayer offers a time for silent prayer and meditation interspersed with contemplative organ works by J. S. Bach and his family. 47th Annual Advent Procession
November 28 at 7:30 pm • Via Livestream Broadcast
Join us for Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s annual Advent Procession, a beloved Hawai‘i tradition since 1975. This year we will present a prelude cantata, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, bwv 61, with choir, orchestra, and soloists. The service marks the start of a new liturgical year as we begin our Advent journey of hope and expectation. A beautiful selection of lessons and carols will be led by the LCH Choir and chamber orchestra, with each lesson brought into greater focus and relevance through collects written especially for this evening’s service by Pr. Jeff Lilley.
Limited in-person seating is available by RSVP with the church office. As with all our services and events, Advent Procession will be livestreamed on our streaming page and the LCH Facebook page and then archived on the LCH Facebook page.
Important Volunteer Opportunity
In order for us to re-open for in-person worship, new ushers are urgently needed. The Worship & Music Committee is hoping that may occur by Christmas. Ushers serve as hosts of worship services at LCH. They have several responsibilities before, during, and after each service. Some of them, such as greeting newcomers, are more apparent than others. These duties are not too difficult, and training will be offered on new safety protocols as the pandemic begins to fade. Ushers also serve at special services held during the Christmas Season and Holy Week. If you feel this is your calling and would like to serve as an usher, please send an email to Peter Flachsbart at pflachsbart@gmail.com.
Committee Chair Reports
It’s time to begin compiling the Annual Report! Please submit your committee’s yearly report to the LCH office by Monday, December 18. Direct questions to the office at 808-941-2566 or email LCH@LCHwelcome.org.
Updating Prayer Requests
Please help us to keep the Prayer Requests list relevant. If you have a friend or loved one who should remain on the list, we are glad to keep them in prayer. Please email the office to let us know when a name may be removed from the list.
Save on Your Taxes!
For individuals taking required distributions from a retirement account, under the new tax law, if you give cash or check donations from your personal funds, you will be taxed on your distribution, and you may not be able to take the deduction. There are two ways to avoid this.
- Donate directly to LCH from your IRA If you take money directly from your IRA to give to LCH, this increases your income and may increase your tax bracket. You may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Give directly by telling your IRA provider to donate to the church—the account representative will do this easily.
- Give appreciated stock directly to LCH. If you sell stock and then donate, it increases your tax bracket, and you may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Instruct your broker to donate directly to LCH.
The church’s legal name and address is:
Lutheran Church of Honolulu (Note: There is no The in the title)
1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822
If you need the Federal Tax ID (EIN) or if you have questions, please contact Steve Miller. As always, please check with your tax advisors to determine what is appropriate for you.
Regular Offerings
While we are not able to meet in person, you are encouraged to mail your offering check directly to the church: Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu HI 96822. If you would like to set up regular electronic funds transfer from your checking or savings account, forms are available at www.lchwelcome.org/support or can be requested by email to LCH@LCHwelcome.org. If you prefer to make a one time contribution or ongoing pledge by credit card, there is a link in the bottom right corner of each page of the church website or you can go directly to www.lchwelcome.org/donate. Thank you!
An Easy Way to Donate
Did you know you can donate to Lutheran Church of Honolulu while shopping without spending any extra money? Shop at smile.amazon.com and increase donations to Lutheran Church of Honolulu! Any Amazon purchase can be made through LCH’s unique charity-link, which will take you directly to smile.amazon.com in support of LCH. Just type this URL in your browser and start shopping: smile.amazon.com/ch/99-0079975.
Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund
The church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.
Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
Virtual Fellowship at LutherFest 2021
Members of the LCH ‘ohana gathered virtually (and in one case in-person) for the fun, food, frivolity, and learning of LutherFest 2021. While a Zoom meeting may not match the ambience of the Hörmann Courtyard, it did make it possible for folks to come together to enjoy delightful musical entertainment (including Scott’s performance of “Lutheran Guy,” a parody of “American Pie” by Don McLean”) and a spirited and educational game of Protestant Reformation Bingo. As items on the Bingo card were called, individuals explained the role of the person, event, or concept in the Protestant Reformation.
As a supplement to the Zoom meeting, Peggy Anderson invite a small group of fully-vaccinated friends to her well-ventilated apartment for potluck as they participated in the Zoom call.
Many thanks to Scott Fikse for planning and producing the entire evening. Thanks also to Cathy Baptista for the screenshot of the Zoom meeting and Linda Muller for her picture of the folks at Miss Peggy’s.
