From Pastor Jeff

Dear friends in Christ,

I recently saw a meme that suggested that in the future we may all use the phrase “That’s 2020” when we want to refer to something awful. It truly has been a challenging and difficult year for most everyone. It is tempting to begin with a litany of all that has gone awry this year, but I am sure you already have your own litany. Instead, I want to begin with a thank you.

Thank you for continuing to hold one another, our country, the world, the environment, healthcare workers, and other front-line personnel in your prayers. They have endured mind-bending stress, and many have died as a result of their commitment to care. We continue to keep them and their families in prayer.

Thank you for persevering through the political upheaval that has created untold stress and anxiety for millions of people.

Thank you for faithfully supporting your congregation. Because of your faithful financial stewardship, Lutheran Church of Honolulu will complete the fiscal year in healthy financial shape. It is simply amazing!

Thank you for joining us in worship each Sunday. LCH has averaged nearly 200 views each Sunday, and nearly 400 views over the course of each week. Some early broadcasts have accumulated well over 1000 views from around the world. The congregation’s proclamation of the Good News continues to grow over time.

Thank you for keeping one another safe. Most of us long to come together in-person for worship. The staff, council, and worship committee agree that our priority must be to protect the most vulnerable among us, and therefore, we are delaying in-person Sunday worship until at least January 31. Your patience and support are greatly appreciated. Believe it or not, some pastors have received angry phone calls and threatening letters on this matter!

Thank you for your support of staff and volunteers: Anne, Scott, Bree, Carolyn, Reid, Mark, and a host of choir members, guest musicians, and tech crew who work each week to keep the organization running, and come each Sunday to bring God’s Word through worship. Marcus, Renee, Jean, Bill, Dan, and others have devoted time every week to running the equipment needed to broadcast worship. You have kindly sent cards and letters expressing your appreciation for the difficult work they are doing, and it means a lot to all of them.

Thank you to the teams of volunteers who faithfully make over 400 sack lunches for IHS whenever they need them. Mary Jo Estes and her team assemble the lunches in record time during a time when food insecurity is at an all-time high. What a gift!

On a personal note, I want to offer my deepest thanks to our amazing staff, who have done a stellar job adjusting to a very different working world and made it all work. Anne juggles two offices and keeps the administrative side of church life humming along. Scott has worked harder than ever bringing flawless musical offerings to our congregation and the community at a time when many churches have shifted to a “bare bones” model for church music. Vicar Bree, who has been a remarkable partner in ministry, Mark, Reid, and a wonderful group of core choir members faithfully share their gifts each week. Carolyn has been a great support in keeping our finances straight.

Together with volunteers like Bill Potter, Rich Mundell, Carol Langner, and Angie Nierman, we are able to do ministry as “normally” as possible in such abnormal times.

Finally, let us give thanks to God, whose abiding Spirit gives us hope, light, and enthusiasm when we need it most. While we cannot say what 2021 will bring, we know that God will dwell in and with us, and we will shine God’s light in the darkness.

Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

LCH Community Garden

In anticipation of the Stewardship theme for the month of February—Stewards of Creation—and in tandem with the goals of Blue Zones, Vicar Bree will begin her internship project mid-January. The project is a small community garden at LCH.

Construction will begin this month! Thus far, the plans are for two, 4×10 foot raised garden beds on the site of the playground that fronts Punahou Street. If you have sources for healthy soil, 2x8x10 boards, 4x4x4 posts, or any garden tools like trowels, hoses, gloves, or seeding flats, let the vicar know. Additionally, if you have alternative ideas/suggestions or would like to help with the project, let the vicar know this too! Just email her at vicar.bree@LCHwelcome.org.

We’ll be limited to a small, outdoor group (under five people or a family pod), but we can find ways to work safely at a distance. After construction finishes, the hopes are to periodically gather individually or in small groups to help with seeding, planting, or watering—maybe even filling out our Blue Zones pledges along the way. Let’s grow (maybe something more than kale…)!

LCH Office Hours During COVID-19 Shelter-at-Home Order

The LCH office and church campus are generally closed to in-person meetings and gatherings as cases of covid-19 in the state continue to rise and as a precaution in accordance with the CDC, Hawai‘i State Governor’s Office, and Honolulu City and County Office of the Mayor’s recommendations regarding covid-19 virus safety. We recommend that you do not leave a phone message on the office voicemail. It is preferable that you please email LCH@LCHwelcome.org to contact the administrator, pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org to contact Pastor Jeff, or scott@LCHwelcome.org to contact the LCH music director. If you prefer to leave a brief voicemail message, your call will be returned when someone is able to check in at the LCH office. Please visit the LCH website at www.lchwelcome.org for more information about weekly events and ministries, and to access the public LCH Facebook page for online worship services (you do not need a Facebook account to access the LCH Facebook page).

Stewardship Corner

God Comes Down: Stewards of God’s Grace

Stewardship 2021 logoAs the new year begins, we continue our exploration of the ways we are stewards of God’s love. We introduced this year-long theme by remembering that God comes down, in the person of Jesus Christ, to be in loving relationship with us. Next, we look in to discover all of the resources/gifts that God has entrusted to our care. Finally, we look out to see the many ways God calls us to use our resources/gifts to love our neighbors near and far.

Throughout December, we have been stewards of the story of God coming down in the person of Jesus, first through prophecy and expectant waiting during Advent and then as we welcome the babe at Christmas. And in January we follow the story as Jesus is revealed to the Magi and then journeys to his baptism by John in the Jordan.

On January 10, the First Sunday after Epiphany, we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus and hear Mark telling us that “just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’” (Mark 1:10–11).

As we remember our own baptisms, we can see ourselves as stewards of God’s grace. Just as God claimed Jesus as “my Son, the Beloved” at his baptism in the Jordan, God graciously claimed each of us as children of God at our own baptisms—whether that was decades in the past for some of us or just a few years ago for some of the younger members of our congregation. Being children of God means that we belong to God and all we have belongs to God as well.

As we focus this month on God’s grace that calls us children of God, we ask ourselves questions like these: How does “belonging to God” shape the way that we live our lives? How might we be good stewards of God’s grace?

Your Stewardship Team
Peggy Anderson, Pam Buckley, Willow Chang, Phyllis Hörmann, Barbara Poole-Street, Bill Potter.

You are invited to join with your LCH ‘ohana on Sundays for a virtual coffee talk following online worship. This discussion time will be via Zoom Meeting, and will run for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

While these are not ideal gathering circumstances, we can at least enjoy a chance to commune together briefly.

IHS logoIHS Brown Bag Meal Prep

LCH continues our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless during these difficult times. Although stay-at-home orders may have relaxed a bit, we anticipate that all the requirements of social distancing, masks, sanitizing, etc. will still be in force. Therefore, only a small group will be asked to make sandwiches, and those individuals will be contacted directly by phone or email. We will keep you updated about when we can be back to our regular group. Thank you for your patience as we navigate our way through the uncertainty.

Family Promise of Hawai‘i Update

Family Promise logoFamily Promise has been a ministry partner for LCH since 2017, when we first started supporting the Shallow Subsidy Program. Although that specific program has been “retired,” Family Promise continues to be a vital service provider in our community for families and children. LCH continues to support this organization through designated contributions of members. In December, the LCH Council voted to send $3,000 from designated contributions to Family Promise. Here’s a news release from October:

Through funding from the City and County of Honolulu Coronavirus Relief Fund administered by the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Family Promise of Hawai‘i (FPH) is providing a safety net for homeless and low-income families on O‘ahu. FPH was awarded $1 million dollars to support vulnerable families with shelter, rental assistance, and access to basic necessities such as food, toiletries, masks, and hand sanitizer.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, many families are facing housing instability and homelessness. As a response to the growing need for food, shelter, and housing support FPH developed a variety of programs to support families in need:

Rent Relief—Rental and mortgage assistance to keep families in their existing housing.

Re-Housing—Payment for security deposits, short-term rental assistance, and housing search support for households who are currently homeless or are living in overcrowded housing environments.

Emergency Shelter—FPH currently has two temporary emergency shelter facilities open (Honolulu & North Shore). Each site has individual units where families are able to self-isolate from others. The Honolulu location can support up to 24 families and the North Shore location can support 6 families.

Drop-In Day Center—Access to the internet, showers, and laundry facilities as well as food and hygiene products for families.

Service Fairs—Through December 2020, we will be hosting bi-monthly drive-thru service fairs. Fairs include access to food, fresh produce, diapers, hygiene products, and community resources.

Through the help of community donations, private Foundation grants, and Coronavirus Relief Funds, FPH has been able to support 239% more households in 2020!

For those who are not familiar with Family Promise, here is some general information about the organization: Family Promise provides comprehensive, holistic solutions for families facing housing instability. Families come to us in crisis; our approach of family-centered services and coordinated compassion helps them rebuild their lives with new skills and ongoing support. Since 2006, we have provided shelter, meals, case management, homelessness prevention, and stabilization services to over 3,000 family members. We believe families should stay together—not be separated—during the most difficult times in their lives. More than 80% of families in our shelter program secure housing because of our intensive case management and community support. Once families secure housing, 95% retain their housing. Check out their website (www.familypromisehawaii.org) for more information, and thanks to all at LCH who support this ministry!

The Orvis Foundation Grant

The LCH music program is again grateful to the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation for their financial support as we look ahead at 2021 and beyond. This is the fourth consecutive year for LCH to receive a grant award given to support our choral leadership, concerts and special services, and other special musical programming. Thank you to Scott Fikse for his time and efforts to secure this generous donation.

Regular Offerings

calabash graphicWhile we are not able to meet in person, you are encouraged to mail your offering check directly to the church: Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu HI 96822. If you would like to set up regular electronic funds transfer from your checking or savings account, forms are available at www.lchwelcome.org/support or can be requested by email to LCH@LCHwelcome.org. If you prefer to make a one time contribution or ongoing pledge by credit card, there is a link in the bottom right corner of each page of the church website or you can go directly to www.lchwelcome.org/donate. Thank you!

Save on Your Taxes!

bean counter graphicFor individuals taking required distributions from a retirement account, under the new tax law, if you give cash or check donations from your personal funds, you will be taxed on your distribution, and you may not be able to take the deduction. There are two ways to avoid this.

  1. Donate directly to LCH from your IRA If you take money directly from your IRA to give to LCH, this increases your income and may increase your tax bracket. You may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Give directly by telling your IRA provider to donate to the church—the account representative will do this easily.
  2. Give appreciated stock directly to LCH. If you sell stock and then donate, it increases your tax bracket, and you may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Instruct your broker to donate directly to LCH.

The church’s legal name and address is:

Lutheran Church of Honolulu (Note: There is no The in the title)
1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822

If you need the Federal Tax ID (EIN) or if you have questions, please contact Steve Miller. As always, please check with your tax advisors to determine what is appropriate for you.

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
