Adventus: Latin “coming”

Several years ago, I was having a conversation with Irmgard Hörmann about what Honolulu was like when she was a youngster. Among her many wonderful stories, she recounted how different travel was in those days. Long before huge jets disgorged hundreds of visitors many times a day, visitors and returning kama‘āina arrived by steam ship. The lumbering cruiser rounded Diamond Head with smoke streaming from her stack and pushing water ahead of her bow. Irmgard described how the children would shout “It’s coming, it’s coming!” and run down to the dock in their bare feet to greet the steamer and her passengers as they disembarked from a long journey.

star graphicAs she told the story, I could see all these years later the excitement sparkling in her eyes, as she said “It’s coming, it’s coming!” Perhaps for a moment, even after all these years, she was reliving a moment of joy, adventure, mystery, and delight. As she told the story, I found myself for a moment barefoot on the wooden wharf at Honolulu Harbor peering through the crowd to catch a glimpse of a steamer rounding the headland and shouting “It’s coming, it’s coming!”

I was reminded of this story as I was writing prayers for the “O Antiphon” service this week. Somehow, in the stress and bad news of covid-19 and the contested election, technology problems at church, and the doom and gloom predictions about the economy of the world, it felt impossible to get excited about the coming of Advent. What prayers could I write to lift up the good news of the impending birth of Jesus? Advent has been rolling around for hundreds and hundreds of years; why should we care? It will come, and it will go like a broken-down horse on a carousel that few people want to ride. What prayers could I wrote for that?

Then I remembered Irmgard’s story. The steamer was not a once in a lifetime event. She saw it many times over many years, but the excitement and anticipation never diminished because you never knew what treasures it would bring, what people would come down the gangplank, or to what new adventures it would whisk its passengers to as it departed for parts unknown. Crowds of adults and children gathered at the pier because the steamer represented something greater than themselves, something stirring and deep that they themselves could not readily identify or dismiss.

Perhaps that is also true of Advent and the beginning of the new liturgical year. We don’t really know what the next year will look like or what God will call us to in the coming days. But we can be confident that in these coming days, the Holy Spirit will sweep us up in the work of God in ways that we can neither imagine or anticipate and accompany us on a journey to parts unknown. We do not know what treasure it will bring or who will join us on the journey, but anything or anybody could happen! We gather in worship, prayer, and service because something greater than ourselves is happening that puts covid-19, the economy, and questionable politics in perspective.

Irmgard taught me something that I will never forget, and that has changed me. Now I look for the steamer coming around Diamond Head. This Advent, and every Advent, I will shout “It’s coming. It’s coming!” I will throw off my shoes and run barefoot to the wharf with Irmgard’s sparkling eyes and wonder—where will God take us this time?

Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

LCH Office Hours During COVID-19 Shelter-at-Home Order

The LCH office and church campus are generally closed to in-person meetings and gatherings as cases of covid-19 in the state continue to rise and as a precaution in accordance with the CDC, Hawai‘i State Governor’s Office, and Honolulu City and County Office of the Mayor’s recommendations regarding covid-19 virus safety. We recommend that you do not leave a phone message on the office voicemail. It is preferable that you please email LCH@LCHwelcome.org to contact the administrator, pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org to contact Pastor Jeff, or scott@LCHwelcome.org to contact the LCH music director. If you prefer to leave a brief voicemail message, your call will be returned when someone is able to check in at the LCH office. Please visit the LCH website at www.lchwelcome.org for more information about weekly events and ministries, and to access the public LCH Facebook page for online worship services (you do not need a Facebook account to access the LCH Facebook page).

An LCH Christmas Pageant Like You’ve Never Seen!

Dear friends in Christ,

With all the craziness of covid-19, disrupted family plans, virtual school, and online worship, the presence of God in Christ continues unabated. God’s message of love coming into the chaos of life, as a child born to Mary and Joseph, reminds us that though much our life is disrupted, God’s love, God’s Emmanuel is still with us. So, although there are lots of events being cancelled around us, we hope you will be as passionate as we are about telling the greatest story ever told, through an online Christmas pageant featuring members the LCH ‘ohana.

We invite you and your family to video record yourselves playing a character or characters in the Christmas pageant. Each family will be given characters to play or a scene to enact. We will send you a script, ideas for set and costume, and instructions for how to upload your video. The collection of videos will be assembled into a single pageant story to be shared as part of our Christmas cycle.

We encourage you to get the whole family involved in the production! You can make costumes from whatever you have on hand, or you can come by the church and pick up a costume. Feel free to record in your apartment, a local park, or here at LCH with a phone, video recorder, or whatever works for you. Perhaps the kids want to film and direct while parents act, or you may want to cast the family dog as a sheep. Use your imagination and make a fun family project!

We might ask some of you to record against a green screen so we can add backgrounds later. Don’t worry about the technical side of things, we’ll help guide you through video uploading and other details. Feel free to do multiple takes and send them all. We will use your footage to make the best version possible.

We hope you are as excited about being part of this year’s pageant as we are about putting it together. This will be a wonderful gift to the community and a lot of fun to do. Please let us know if you are interested in helping with this project by emailing Pastor Jeff at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org. We will contact you about what part/s your family would like to take on, and send you a script.

May God bless and keep you,
Pastor Jeff and Vicar Bree

Stewardship Corner

We give thanks to all of your for expressing your gratitude for the past year, through your pledges of time, talents, and giving. With December and the beginning of a new church year, we pick a new overarching theme of being Stewards of God’s Love.

Different aspects of the ways God engages with us and we—as stewards of God’s love—respond are shown in the accompanying graphic that will guide us this year. God comes down, in the person of Jesus Christ, to be in loving relationship with us. Next, we look in to discover all of the resources/gifts that God has entrusted to our care. Finally, we look out to see the many ways God calls us to use our resources/gifts to love our neighbors near and far. Over the next year, we hope to lead you in exploring each of these ways we are stewards of God’s love.

Stewardship 2021 logoOur Advent journey, which began November 29th, is a journey of preparation and waiting with anticipation to celebrate once again God coming down to be with us in the person of Jesus Christ. This specific story will be our focus in December

“Stories are powerful! As disciples of Jesus, we experience God alive in God’s story, the Bible. God’s gospel story is written on our hearts and alive in us.” We are stewards of this story that begins with God coming down or love coming down, to be with us. We see this stewardship in action as Linda Miller and Stephanie Luuloa share many stories in the Bible through Godly Play every Sunday. We also experience this stewardship in action as our children and youth share the Christmas story in the form of a pageant. The Thursday morning Book of Faith Bible Study is also where the story is being shared. In the Adult Forum, we see stewardship in action as Wayne Gau makes Old Testament characters come alive. And often during this season, God’s story is told through music and art too.

As we attend to the ways God is at work in our own lives and share our stories with others, we can be stewards of the story too. Are there other ways that you see the whole congregation active as stewards of the story?

May you be filled with hope as we journey through Advent and Christmas, begin a new year, and continue to explore the ways God comes down to us.

Your Stewardship Team
Peggy Anderson, Pam Buckley, Willow Chang, Phyllis Hormann, Barbara Poole-Street, Bill Potter.

Committee Chairs!

It’s time to begin compiling the Annual Report! Please submit your committee’s yearly report to the LCH office by Friday, December 18. Direct questions to the office at 808-941-2566 or email lch@LCHwelcome.org.

End of Year Donations

Thank you for your generous giving throughout this year. Your faithful stewardship has enabled us to grow in ministry and faithfully support the larger church and community. Mahalo!

Your generous gifts are always needed and appreciated this time of year, and any gift you can give will be a blessing. Additional gifts to the general fund are always most helpful, but you may also make gifts to support capital projects, community assistance, or any other need.

The IRS requires that charitable donations must be received at LCH, or postmarked by December 31, in order to be counted as 2020 charitable deductions. Contributions brought to LCH or postmarked on or after January 1 will be counted as 2021 charitable deductions, no matter what the date is on the check.

First Mondays: Advent Organ Chorales—A Virtual Organ Recital

Monday, December 7 • 7:00 pm • Livestreamed on the LCH Facebook Page

organ pipes graphicThe art of hymn introductions was perfected in Germany, where the “chorale prelude” was developed by Johann Sebastian Bach and other north German composers. The chorale prelude is a relatively short setting for organ that is intended to introduce the hymn tune to the congregation. This concert will feature a wide variety of Advent chorale preludes by international composers from Germany, France, Norway, and the United States: Bach, Johann Pachelbel, Hugo Distler, Marcel Dupré, Egil Hovland, Gerald Near and Paul Manz. A quartet will sing the hymns immediately following each chorale prelude.

The concert features Katherine Crosier, organist, with a quartet made up of Naomi Barrett, soprano, Sarah Young, alto, Bowe Souza, tenor, and Jeremy Wong, bass.

The concert will be livestreamed December 7 at 7:00 pm and then archived on the LCH Facebook page: facebook.com/LCHwelcome.

IHS logoIHS Brown Bag Meal Prep

LCH continues our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless during these difficult times. Although stay-at-home orders may have relaxed a bit, we anticipate that all the requirements of social distancing, masks, sanitizing, etc. will still be in force. Therefore, only a small group will be asked to make sandwiches, and those individuals will be contacted directly by phone or email. We will keep you updated about when we can be back to our regular group. Thank you for your patience as we navigate our way through the uncertainty.

Regular Offerings

calabash graphicWhile we are not able to meet in person, you are encouraged to mail your offering check directly to the church: Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu HI 96822. If you would like to set up regular electronic funds transfer from your checking or savings account, forms are available at www.lchwelcome.org/support or can be requested by email to LCH@LCHwelcome.org. If you prefer to make a one time contribution or ongoing pledge by credit card, there is a link in the bottom right corner of each page of the church website or you can go directly to www.lchwelcome.org/donate. Thank you!

Save on Your Taxes!

bean counter graphicFor individuals taking required distributions from a retirement account, under the new tax law, if you give cash or check donations from your personal funds, you will be taxed on your distribution, and you may not be able to take the deduction. There are two ways to avoid this.

  1. Donate directly to LCH from your IRA If you take money directly from your IRA to give to LCH, this increases your income and may increase your tax bracket. You may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Give directly by telling your IRA provider to donate to the church—the account representative will do this easily.
  2. Give appreciated stock directly to LCH. If you sell stock and then donate, it increases your tax bracket, and you may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Instruct your broker to donate directly to LCH.

The church’s legal name and address is:

Lutheran Church of Honolulu (Note: There is no The in the title)
1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822

If you need the Federal Tax ID (EIN) or if you have questions, please contact Steve Miller. As always, please check with your tax advisors to determine what is appropriate for you.

Charity Deductions—CARES Act

Under previous tax law, charitable deductions were only allowed if the taxpayer’s itemized deductions exceeded the standard deduction. This prevented many from deducting their offerings because the standard deduction is substantial. For 2020, you may be able to deduct your offerings. The following notice explains changes for the 2020 tax year:

Above-the-Line Charitable Deduction
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act allows taxpayers to deduct up to $300 for cash contributions to public charities made in 2020 even if they take the standard deduction and do not itemize. Taxpayers who itemize deductions can deduct 2020 charitable cash contributions up to 100% of adjusted gross income. These provisions do not apply to contributions to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or non-operating private foundations.

As always, consult your accountant.

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
