From Pastor Jeff
Mourning Ruth Bader Ginsberg
I was two years old when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Although I have no cognitive memory of the day itself, I experienced, second hand, the fundamental shock, grief, and loss of hope that washed over my parents and their friends. It was a tidal surge of emotion that did not recede in an hour, or a week, or even a year. Many years later, my mom would describe how, for many in her generation, JFK’s death was like a tear in the fabric of their hopeful lives—everything seemed a little darker.
I had a little taste of that emotion on September 18, when Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg died at the age of 87. Her death was neither unexpected nor sudden. Her life was not torn away like JFK’s, and I am certainly not trying to draw a direct comparison. But the death of RBG signaled the end of a life spent fighting for justice for those who—by virtue of their gender, religion, ethnicity, color, or sexuality—had been denied equal treatment under the law. Although labeled a radical liberal by her detractors, her measured, meticulous, and fair-minded approach to law sought to level the playing field that had been so terribly imbalanced against anyone who was not born white, male, straight, and Christian. When I heard of her death, I wondered who would now take that role on the court.
Even in her own chosen profession, she proved to be an exception to the established rules. She once remarked that she had three strikes against her. She said, “I am a woman, I am a mother, and I am a Jew.” She came of age in an era when women were discouraged from working outside of the home; when they faced legal, systemic discrimination in the workplace; and when antisemitism was a cherished tradition. Despite the three strikes against her, she not only championed her own cause but became a voice of hope and reason for generations of men, women, and children seeking some level of dignity, opportunity, and justice under the law.
Over her years on the bench, she helped preserve court decisions that protected the rights of all people under the very system of law established for the good of all and understood the need to constantly challenge those forces bent on destroying the fundamental value of equality for all. RBG’s example encouraged thousands of young women to excel in careers previously reserved for “men only.” Her determination to be heard when her male counterparts sought to shout her down gave courage to the timid, her keen intellect raised the bar to a new level, and her good humor reminded us to be human.
Although her efforts were heroic, my grief is not for the loss of a heroine, but for the death of person whose courage and determination were exemplary for those of us who strive for justice. Her work over the past many decades gave legal teeth to the work we are driven to by the words of Jesus: “Love one another.” People like RBG help me to take the ideal of love out of the ethereal and theoretical and bring it to bear on the real and everyday lives of people who simply want to be treated fairly and with dignity. Perhaps, in the wake of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s death, it is time for all of us to take up her mantle of leadership and place it on our own shoulders; for the need is great, and the laborers are few.
Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

LCH Office Hours During COVID-19 Shelter-at-Home Order
The LCH office and church campus are generally closed to in-person meetings and gatherings as cases of covid-19 in the state continue to rise an as a precaution in accordance with the CDC, Hawai‘i State Governor’s Office, and Honolulu City and County Office of the Mayor’s recommendations regarding covid-19 virus safety. We recommend that you do not leave a phone message on the office voicemail. It is preferable that you please email LCH@LCHwelcome.org to contact the administrator, pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org to contact Pastor Jeff, or scott@LCHwelcome.org to contact the LCH music director. If you prefer to leave a brief voicemail message, your call will be returned when someone is able to check in at the LCH office. Please visit the LCH website at www.lchwelcome.org for more information about weekly events and ministries, and to access the public LCH Facebook page for online worship services (you do not need a Facebook account to access the LCH Facebook page).
In October, we weave stories of Faith and Community into our Tapestry of Faith as we close out the church year. While we still cannot gather physically as a faith community, we can thankfully gather virtually via Facebook and Zoom. The tapestry, now hanging in the Nave, reflects our many and varied interwoven faith stories.
Our tapestry started as a not-so-blank canvas of words and headlines woven into the mesh of faith we share at LCH. We hoped to create a visual representation of the way we weave Faith and Stewardship together in all we do at LCH.
During Advent, members started weaving ribbons and bows into the tapestry. As we prepared for Faith and the Arts Sunday, people added a Tree of Life, prayerful art, and various totems to our tapestry.
Focusing on Faith and Justice during Lent, we encouraged you to weave for others, and many of you wove or purchased potholders as a donation to those in need. We planned to highlight Faith and Justice by hosting a One Pot One Hope brunch for the congregation. However, we were all ordered to stay at home due to the coronavirus, and the weaving of labels from cans of chili and bread wrappers remains to be completed. IHS sandwich making continued as guidelines allowed, and donations for meals replaced that activity when gathering to make sandwiches were banned. We continued to gather for worship on online via Facebook and in small groups via Zoom. We were blessed to see many people from around the world join us. Our tapestry reaches that far!
We wove Faith and Creation into the tapestry during the Easter season. The lockdown brought blessings in reduced traffic, and the earth healed as our carbon footprint grew smaller. As parks and beaches opened, we encouraged you to enjoy outdoor activities such as gardening, hiking, and frolicking in the ocean again.
Weaving Faith and Self-Care was the theme for Pentecost. During Adult Forum, Juditha offered sessions on artful prayer, and Willow taught a session on yoga. In September Willow offered yoga classes to those interested, via Zoom.
Now we transition to Faith and Community. We are looking into the possibility of becoming a Blue Zones congregation and continue to explore ways to stay connected. All of us on the Stewardship Team are grateful for every member and friend of the congregation; for God’s constant love and protection during these unpredictable, challenging times; and for all that we have become as we have journeyed through them together.
As this year of weaving our tapestry draws to a close, we thank all of you for being good stewards by sharing your talents as well as maintaining your giving to the congregation. During worship in the month of October, members of the congregation will be sharing their gratitude for the blessings of our shared life of faith, and we will end the month with an invitation for each of us to renew our commitments of support for LCH with our talents, time, and treasure.
Your Stewardship Team (Peggy Anderson, Bobby Broyles, Willow Chang, Pam Buckley, Barbara Poole-Street, Bill Potter)
Mahalo for Give Aloha Donations
We are grateful to all who participated in the Give Aloha Program sponsored by Foodland/Western Union during the month of September at local Foodland and Sack ’n’ Save locations.
Note: If you want your contribution listed on your giving statement, please send your receipt (clearly noting your name) by mail or email to the church office. Although, for tax purposes, your contribution is listed as “Foodland” or “Sack ’n’ Save,” we are happy to include it on your giving statement and consider it as giving towards your annual pledge. We can direct it someplace other than the general fund if you make that designation.
Angel Network In-Gathering
LCH is not collecting donations for Angel Network Charities until further notice. However, Angel Network is accepting donations at the Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church location in east O‘ahu: 5339 Kalaniana‘ole Highway, Honolulu 96821.
For those who are able and interested in donating, they accept donations on Thursdays and Fridays, from 8:30 am to noon. They will only accept packaged, unopened dry goods (e.g. cereal, flour, sugar, pasta, etc.) and canned goods.
Angel Network requires that donating drivers identify themselves and remain in their vehicle. Volunteers will offload donation items from your vehicle with protective gloves. Over 2,500 individuals are served monthly through this program. Mahalo for your generosity and support.

Join for one, two, or all four sessions from the safety of your own shelter-in-place. These unique classes also provide an opportunity to answer your questions about yoga practice and form. You don’t need yoga pants, previous experience, youth, flexibility, or any real-life experience in India to learn about yoga. Bring your amazing self to be in wonder of your abilities! You are invited to join with your LCH ‘ohana on Sundays for a virtual coffee talk following online worship. This discussion time will be via Zoom Meeting, and will run for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
In order to avoid “Zoom bombing” (surprise visits from unsavory folks), you will need to contact Pastor Jeff, via email at pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org, for a meeting number and password to log into the meeting. While these are not ideal gathering circumstances, we can at least enjoy a chance to commune together briefly.
Compline
Sundays, October 4 & 18, 7:30 pm • Via Live-stream broadcast
We warmly invite all people in all places of faith and life to Compline. Offered on the first and third Sundays of each month, this beautiful candle-lit service is a meditative experience of a cappella singing and chanting to commemorate the day’s end. Led by members of the LCH Men’s Schola, musical selections include Gregorian chant, Taizé chant, Renaissance polyphony, and more.
Access to the LCH public Facebook page at facebook.com/LCHwelcome or by using the link on the bottom of any page on the LCH website.
Third Quarter Giving Statements
Thank you for your continued support of the ministries of our congregation through you contributions. Because we have been worshipping virtually, I did not prepare giving statements at the end of the first two quarters of the year, but they will be available for the third quarter. This will allow you to review your giving so far this year.
To save on postage and speed up the process of distributing giving statements, we will use capabilities of the church’s accounting software to email statements to anyone whose email address is entered in that database. The statement will take the form of a PDF of the printed statements you are used to getting attached to a regular email.
Third quarter giving statements will be distributed by October 8, at the latest, to anyone who has given more than $50 this year. If you have recently changed your email address or haven’t given us your email address before, please send your new email address to lch@LCHwelcome.org by Monday, October 5. If your email is not included in the database, your statement will be printed and sent via regular mail.
When you get your third quarter giving statement, please check to make sure that all donations through September 30 have been recorded, that your contributions were posted to the correct fund, and that your pledge (if you made one) is recorded correctly. If there are any errors, I sincerely apologize. Please email me at bill.potter808@gmail.com or send mail to the church office, and I will research the error and make corrections as quickly as possible.
Again, mahalo for your support.
Bill Potter, financial secretary

IHS Brown Bag Meal Prep
LCH continues our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless during these difficult times. Although stay-at-home orders may have relaxed a bit, we anticipate that all the requirements of social distancing, masks, sanitizing, etc. will still be in force. Therefore, only a small group will be asked to make sandwiches, and those individuals will be contacted directly by phone or email. We will keep you updated about when we can be back to our regular group. Thank you for your patience as we navigate our way through the uncertainty.
LCH Women’s Book Club
Monday, October 19, 10:00 am, via Zoom online meeting
LCH Women’s Book Club will meet via Zoom online meeting. The group will discuss Next Year in Havana, by Chanel Cleeton. Reformation Concert
Thursday, October 29, 7:00 pm • Livestreaming on the LCH Facebook Page
Section leaders from the LCH Choir are joined by cello and organ in a special concert featuring music of the Reformation. Martin Luther believed that music holds a special place in our lives by connecting us to God in profound ways. His own hymn texts and compositions have inspired composers for generations. Join us for choral, solo, and instrumental works that are inescapably connected to our rich Lutheran heritage. Suggested donations of $10 may be made by mail or via PayPal. The concert program will be available for download from the LCH homepage the week of the concert.
Virtual LutherFest 2020
Saturday, October 31 • 6:00 pm via Zoom Meeting
For 2020, LutherFest will be a virtual event via Zoom on Saturday, October 31, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Join us online to enjoy some great company and entertainment from the comfort of your own home.
LutherFest wouldn’t be the same without traditional bratwurst. Paradise Brats has agreed to supply us with their very German bratwurst. The brats will be packaged into 5 per package and must be pre-ordered between October 20 and 29 (or until we sell out). Place your order by emailing Vicar Bree at vicar.bree@lchwelcome.org. We will have a drive through Bratwurst pick up at church on Friday, October 30, 4:00 to 6:30 pm. If you are unable to pick them up at this time, we will do our best to make alternative arrangements. You will have to cook them yourself, but it will be worth it!
We will have live entertainment broadcast from the courtyard featuring a surprise musician and music from our own community (subject to quarantine rules). This will be a live event through Zoom, and we will send out a Zoom link a week or so before the event.
Even though we will not be having a contest or pouring LCH wine, in keeping with tradition, we welcome your generous donations, which will benefit organization Waikīkī Health Center Youth Outreach.
Danke sehr and hope to see you there!
Blue Zones Project
We will seek congregational approval at the Annual Meeting (First Half) in November to work towards certification as a Blue Zones organization. This will be an extension of our engagement in the Blue Zones engagement principles of spirituality, family life, and social life as described below.
The Blue Zones Project is a community-wide well-being initiative, based on research from regions around the world that have the highest percentage of centenarians. This research has been consolidated into nine lifestyle habits/best practices that support a healthy lifestyle, longevity, and living more meaningful lives:
- Find ways to move more.
- Know your purpose in life.
- Find ways to reduce stress.
- Eat mindfully.
- Put less meat and more plants on your plate.
- Moderate alcohol intake.
- Belong to a faith-based community; create time for spirituality.
- Invest time with family.
- Enjoy time with good friends.
Blue Zones is a social initiative aimed at improving well-being in ourselves, our church community, and the community at large. Some requirements for certification as a Blue Zones organization are:
- To plant and maintain a community garden—Vicar Bree has already indicated her interest in planting and maintaining a garden. Her degree in sustainable agriculture can be put to good use.
- To promote volunteer opportunities in the community—We already have a strong presence through our commitment to IHS to assist with feeding the homeless, among others.
- To host well-being events—Willow Chang has been hosting online yoga classes via Zoom.
There are many other requirements that we are already engaged in. We would also like to get a sense of the level of interest in becoming a certified Blue Zones organization. If you are interested in helping our church become a certified Blue Zones organization, you are asked to be willing to do one or more of the following:
- Commit to learn more about the Blue Zones Project.
- Take the RealAge test, that shows you the true age of your body, by signing-up at hmsa.com/Sharecare.
- Join a Blue Zones Project® Moai®. A moai (pronounced mow-eye) is a special social group that commits to meet for ten weeks to walk, potluck, or discover your purpose together. A moai can help you create new friendships with people who support healthy behaviors.
- Attend a Purpose Workshop. People who know their purpose live up to seven years longer.
- Volunteer with Blue Zones Project or another organization in your community. Volunteers tend to be happier and healthier and lead a more purposeful life.
- Join the Blue Zones Project Action Force. We will invite you to help support food, active living, and tobacco policies that will help make healthy choices easier in your community.
The next step is to select from one to five actions, listed below, that you pledge to complete. Some of these activities could be hosted by Blue Zones staff in Hawai‘i:
- Keep a comfortable pair of walking shoes or a bike in plain sight.
- Adopt a dog.
- Attend a Blue Zones Project Purpose Workshop.
- Remove all computers and electronics from my bedroom.
- Designate a space in my home for quiet time, meditation, or prayer.
- Stock my cupboard with 10-inch dinner plates.
- Remove TVs and computers from the kitchen and dining areas.
- Own a bathroom scale, put it in plain sight, and weigh myself regularly.
- Attend a plant-based cooking class.
- Grow a garden at my home or adopt a plot at a community garden.
- Schedule a weekly happy hour with friends.
- Have a conversation about getting older.
- Actively participate in a faith-based organization or try a new one.
Please contact Miles Sato (mmsato@ieee.org) if you are interested in helping our church become a certified Blue Zones organization. Additional information about the Blue Zones Project in Hawaii can be found at info.bluezonesproject.com/bzphawaii.
Volunteer Opportunity: LCH Website Team
We all know our website is the face of LCH to people outside of congregation. It tells people who we are and what goes on here, and it provides members of the LCH ‘ohana with information about both what happened in the past and what’s going on this month.
We’re all happy when visitors tell us they found us because of the website, and I hope we’re all proud of its professional appearance and the wealth of information available on the site. For years the LCH website has been my one-man labor of love and, while I’m happy to continue working hard to grow and maintain the site for long-term sustainability, we need to develop a team of several individuals to share the work and ensure continuity. So, I am looking for two or three members from the LCH ‘ohana to join the website team.
Work on the website requires basic knowledge of html, the language of webpages, but that can be taught and is not a prerequisite for joining the website team. What is required are commitment to the mission of LCH, a couple of hours a week that can be devoted to the website, an openness to learning new skills (like html coding), good basic computer skills, and a good internet connection.
If you have any question about what’s involved in being part of the website team or want to volunteer, please contact me at webmaster@lchwelcome.org.

Request for Committee Chairs
It is time to begin making the LCH 2021 budget. It will be distributed for comment at the Annual Meeting—First Half, on November 22. Please, at your next meeting, estimate what you will need for the 2021 budget. Please email budget projections for your committee to Steve Miller (stevedmiller.sm@gmail.com) by the end of October. If no update is received, your committee’s 2020 budget projections will be assumed adequate for the 2021 fiscal year.

BIG Savings!
An investor installed photovoltaic solar panels for electricity generation (PV) on our roof in 2010. We paid him a discounted rate for the electricity generation. In early 2019, we purchased the system in order to generate our own electricity. Our savings has already paid back about one third of the purchase price!
The PV system continues to produce electricity near the original installation rate. In three years, we expect to be paid back and generating free electricity and we anticipate many more years of energy generation. Since installing the system, we have saved 25 tons of carbon from going into the atmosphere—that’s the weight of seven elephants in carbon emissions saved!
BEWARE Fake Emails from Pastor Jeff!
Several members of the LCH community have received fake emails—pretending to be from Pastor Jeff, Vicar Bree, Bishop Taylor, and other church leaders—asking for help, gift cards, or financial contributions. These emails are not from us! As the online presence of the church grows, hackers, phishers, and others are taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to steal as much as they can by posing as church officials. Please follow these tips to avoid computer hacks and phishing:
- LCH and synod staff will never send email solicitations requesting monetary donations, gift cards, or other negotiable instruments.
- Always confirm the identity of the sender of the email before opening. Do this by “hovering” your cursor over the sender name in your Inbox (without opening the email!). You will be able to see the sender’s full email address and can confirm if it is legitimate/familiar or different than the official address for Pastor Jeff (pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org), Vicar Bree (vicar.bree@lchwelcome.org) or other staff.
- You can usually determine a spam email by expanding your email app to full screen size. This allows you to view the full email subject and initial text without having to open the email. You can spot suspicious requests in this manner, mark as spam or junk, and delete without opening.
- If in doubt about an LCH member’s email address, confirm the questionable email address using your email app directory or the LCH Directory. Does the email match the one listed in the directory? If you are still unsure, call the person to confirm. Do not request confirmation by replying to the suspect email (obviously)!
- Once you have confirmed that an email is a fake, mark it as spam or junk mail and delete it from your spam/junk mailbox. This helps the email application administrators track false emails.

The church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.
Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
