A Church Re-enlivened

It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid. Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments.

On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared.

Luke 23:54—24:1

Soon after you receive this newsletter, we will be deep into Holy Week and earnest preparation for Easter. For weeks, many of us have walked the journey of Lent together in midweek meals, worship, and prayer. It has been a peaceful, thoughtful, and I hope, helpful exploration of how God’s love permeates our very being. Simple meals, simple worship, and time for reflection have hopefully prepared us, in some small way, for what is to come next.

Jesus’ followers, after his death, also found themselves preparing for what would come next. Luke recounts that some women, who were his disciples, prepared the spices to be used to prepare his body for burial. There had been no time after Jesus’ crucifixion for them to do what was proper for their master. They returned to the tomb on the first day of the week. It was an act of love and devotion honoring, not only Jesus, but also the community that had formed around him. For them, Jesus was dead.

St. Mary and St. Severus churchesHaving prepared to anoint the dead, they were not ready for what they found! There was no body to anoint, no hands to caress, or forehead to kiss. An empty tomb greeted them with its wide-open maw. Had his body been stolen? Where could he be? In the Gospel of Luke, two men stand in the tomb dressed in dazzling white. “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” they ask the women. “He is not here, but has risen.” Two thousand years later, we continue to look into the tomb but we are no longer surprised by what we find. We have heard the story countless times, told countless ways, but the ending is always the same.

If the story seems fantastical, unbelievable, or irrelevant, we have only ourselves to blame. We sometimes give up on God’s kingdom and go through the motions of doing church instead of being church. Sometimes we approach faith and church like we are preparing for a funeral. We hear statistic after statistic about the impending death of organized Christianity, and we accept it as a forgone conclusion, just as Jesus’ followers accepted that he was dead. We have prepared the spices for funeral, but there is no funeral, just a feast.

Imagine a church re-enlivened by the news of the resurrected Christ living in and through God’s disciples. What if we are not being called to a funeral, but to a new adventure in Christ’s presence in the world? What if the Easter dawn could be as exciting today as it was two millennia ago?

Could we throw down our funeral spices and take up the feat? Perhaps the body of Christ, the church, is not dying so much as she is entering a time of renewal that might involve metamorphic changes to our ministry. Could we do it?

You good people of Lutheran Church of Honolulu have always been up for a change. As we look to God’s future, I hope we can be leaders for the greater church and be light for the kind of metamorphosis that will allow us to proclaim in full voice, “Christ is Risen; he is Risen indeed!”

May God bless and keep us all as we listen for what God is up to in the world; as we join with all who love God to bring God’s promise to pass.

Blessings and peace,
Pastor Jeff

From Vicar Andy

Aloha LCH,

'ohana graphicLent is my favorite liturgical season. This intentional time of deliberate devotion, communal contemplation, and self-reflection appears to run counter to culture in the society we live in. While mainstream society stresses busy-ness and work, Lent challenges this narrative and encourages us to consider another way. The way of Lent is the way of pausing and being intentional. I remember one of my seminary professors reminding us to take a few deep intentional breaths throughout our days. Think about that—she had to remind us to breathe. Dr. Moe-Lobeda took this practice so seriously that she even interrupted class a number of times during the semester and led us through her practice. I confess, I do not always remember to take time for intentional deep breathing. However, it has become my 2019 Lenten discipline. Sit or lie in a comfortable position, close your eyes, take a deep breath in, hold it for 5–10 seconds, release, and open your eyes. Immediately after, I hope you feel as centered and rejuvenated as I do.

During the month of March, LCH and the Fikse and Cummings families hosted our first two ‘Ohana Gatherings. These gatherings were a huge success and a lot of fun. Those who attended brought good food, conversation, and community to the gatherings. The hosts and locations of our April gatherings will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

Contact me or sign up in the courtyard between services if you are interested in attending one of the upcoming gatherings.

See you in church,
Vicar Andy

Family Promise Shallow Subsidy

Family Promise logoSamantha Church, executive director of Family Promise, informed us last fall of a new venture for the agency. “In other news, we actually recently were awarded a new grant fund from an organization called Help Us Move, along with American Savings Bank, to support rental subsidies for our families! The caveat is that we have to raise $20,000 from the community as a match for them to release the funds to us.”

They have raised over $11,000 so far, with LCH contributing just over $2,000 from one of our Shallow Subsidy grants. There are still $8,000 remaining in the challenge, and we have been asked to again contribute to this challenge. The LCH council, at the March meeting, voted to donate $3,000 from our accumulated Shallow Subsidy funds to help move Family Promise to their goal of meeting the entire challenge. So far, they have been able to house 10 families, including 22 children, with the matching funds. All families are still in housing and doing well.

This is a very challenging time to find housing for homeless or those near homelessness. The inventory is very low; landlords want their money upfront, not stretched out over a year’s time, as with the original Shallow Subsidy model. Even with these difficulties, Family Promise continues to search out appropriate housing and to offer their families education in financial planning and management.

Family Promise is also launching a new site, based in Wahiawā, this summer. The site will host prevention, shelter, and stabilization services and will allow Family Promise to increase the capacity of who they are able to serve by thirty-five percent.

LCH continues to receive contributions from members and friends to help support our involvement in this collaboration with Family Promise. If you’d like to be involved, a one-time or monthly contribution in any amount is most welcome. Be sure to indicate that your gift should go to Family Promise. A huge thank you to all who have supported our involvement with Family Promise.

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
