From Pastor Jeff
Proactive Faith
Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth;
break forth, O mountains, into singing!
For the Lord has comforted his people,
and will have compassion on his suffering ones. Isaiah 49:13
The season of Advent is often described as having two main themes: waiting and hope. We are familiar with waiting. After all, much of Christianity has been waiting for Jesus to fulfill his promise to come again for over 2000 years! But after this year of war, poverty, misogyny, the rise of white supremacy and hate crimes, mass shootings, and political turmoil, my mind turns to hope.
The quote from Isaiah, above, lies smack in the middle of God chastising her people for worshipping idols and following Baal. Amidst the vitriol comes a word of hope. Despite all the transgressions of the people, for which God holds them rightly accountable, God announces that love and life will always prevail and that God’s people remain steadfastly connected to God. These are words I need to hear and to say.
Last month, a gunman shot 12 people in a club in Thousand Oaks, California. I immediately texted my brother, who lives nearby with his three sons, to ensure they were okay. I also thought of the many California Lutheran students I met last summer, who might have been at the Borderline bar, and I worried for who might be lying dead on the floor. Although it turned out that I did not know any of the victims, I found myself once again grieving senseless deaths.
It is shocking to realize that there has been an average of nearly one mass shooting a day in the U.S. during 2018. It is common enough that some of the survivors of the Las Vegas rampage found themselves at Borderline, facing yet another shooter. One young man said, “No one should have to call their parents twice in one lifetime to tell them they survived a mass shooting.” Even more sadly, young people in many parts of the world run the gauntlet of gunfire, bombs, rape, and assault every day of their lives. For them, the story in the U.S. is a comparative cakewalk. How can we ask these people to have hope in this season of Advent?
The text from Isaiah reminds us that, even in the midst of life’s greatest difficulties, God abides, loves, and moves us toward reconciliation, despite our best efforts to self-destruct. Even more, God keeps working through God’s people to be a beacon of light in the midst of darkness, to stand with those who are weak or simply tired, to see those who feel invisible, and to touch those who yearn to be heard and loved. Hope is possible because God primes us to hold one another up when it seems we cannot stand for another second. Hope is possible because the hurts of the world that lead a young marine to commit such a horrible affront to humanity can, and must, be met with love and listening and peace. Hope is possible because God refuses to let hate or violence, racism or misogyny, poverty or cruelty have the last word.
We will not and cannot let the hurts of the world fade from our memory or fall from our hands. We remember because God remembers. We act because God is already acting to bring love into the world. As we move toward the light of Christmas, our Advent theme will be, “Who Are We Forgetting, Remembering God’s People.” We hope to keep the people Jesus most cared for—the poor, the widow, and the child—at the forefront in our thoughts, for God’s deepest hope is coming into the world, a child, born in a manger.
For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.
Blessings,
Pastor Jeff
From Vicar Andy
Aloha, everyone!
I want to first say thank you to all those who contributed to our Advent devotional booklet this year! I loved reading the creative ways you reflected on and interpreted the texts. It was fun to see them printed with all the colors and recognizable names. By the time you are reading this, we will have begun the distribution process. If you are reading this and unable to get one at church, please let me know and I will mail one to you.
Also related to Advent, Pastor Jeff and I have been working on some creative ways to approach Sunday mornings. Our brainstorming sessions look chaotic, when written out on the white board, but eventually we created order. Poor Anne often walks into the boardroom with much confusion as we passionately work on the season.
Finally, the Middle School Youth Gathering was a huge success! We have some wonderful middle schoolers (as I am sure you know), and it was fun to see them meet other middle schoolers in the synod. On the way over, despite having an early morning flight, our group buzzed with excitement for the gathering. On the way back, we all spent some time napping—we were all exhausted from the weekend.
See you in church,
Vicar Andy

Donate a Poinsettia for Christmas
You have an opportunity to dedicate a poinsettia plant to help decorate the nave for Christmas. Look for a form in your Sunday bulletin. If you wish to donate poinsettia, please fill out a form and put it in the collection basket, with check or cash for the total cost (plants are $8.50 each). After Christmas, you may take your plant home. Thank you for helping to make the environment festive for Christmas!
End of Year Donations
Thank you for your generous giving throughout this year. Your faithful stewardship has enabled us to grow in ministry and faithfully support the larger church and community. Mahalo! Your generous gifts are always needed and appreciated this time of year, and any gift you can give will be a blessing. Additional gifts to the general fund are always most helpful, but you may also make gifts to support capital projects, community assistance, or any other need.
The IRS requires that donations made for charitable purposes must be received here at the church or postmarked by December 31 in order to be counted as 2018 charitable deductions. Contributions brought to church on or after January 1 will be counted as 2019 charitable deductions, no matter what the date is on the check.
It’s time for the Jesse Tree!
Sunday during Advent at 9:10 am
As Advent approaches, we invite the congregation to join our children for the Jesse Tree devotions, each Sunday of Advent, in the nave at 9:10 am. It is a tradition at LCH for the children to present this short service of music and readings during the four Sundays of Advent. The children will be focusing on the people in the Old Testament that lead the way for Christ. This year, the Jesse Tree services will be held on December 2, 9, 16, and 23. The older children will read Bible stories and prayers, the youngest children will hang ornaments on the tree representing each story, and everyone will sing the Jesse Tree song.
Angel Network In-Gathering
Sunday, December 2
On the first Sunday of each month, an in-gathering of food and personal items is collected at LCH for Angel Network, a ministry based out of Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church. The items are taken to Angel Network during the following week. Over 2,500 individuals are served monthly through this program. We are grateful for your generosity and support.

Confirmation is voluntary for youth, grades 6 and up, who would like to confirm their faith. At baptism we promise to “place in (your child’s) hands the Holy Scripture and provide for their education in the Christian Faith.” In confirmation class we study scripture, the Reformation, and Christian history, but we are more interested in helping young people develop as persons of faith. For more information, please contact Pastor Jeff or Vicar Andy.
44th Annual Advent Procession: The Great “O” Antiphons
Sunday, December 2, 7:30 pm
Lutheran Church of Honolulu celebrates our 44th Annual Advent Procession with Peter Hallock’s mystical setting of The Great “O” Antiphons. First presented in 1975, the Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Advent Procession has become a Honolulu tradition. This year, Advent choral selections by composers Francisco Guerrero, Andreas Hammerschmidt, George Oldroyd, Charles Wood, and others will be intermingled with hymns, carols, and the Magnificat by Edward Bairstow. Organist Mark Wong will accompany the LCH Choir and Men’s Schola on our beautiful Beckerath organ. Please join us as we begin a new liturgical year, carry on a beloved Hawai‘i tradition, and look forward with expectation and wonder to the Christmas season ahead.
Friends with Farms Produce Pick-Up
Tuesdays, December 4 & 18, 2:30–4:00 pm • LCH Boardroom
Friends with Farms (formerly Holoholo General Store) is a Community Supported Agriculture organization, or csa, that works with LCH to bring you fresh, farm direct produce from multiple, local farms. For more information visit their website at www.FriendsWithFarms.com for bag options, pricing, and to sign up.

Pack a Shoebox for Island Keiki
LCH Sunday school teens are asking the congregation to make gift “shoeboxes” for homeless keiki (infants to teens) this holiday season. Project Hawai‘i, Inc. will distribute shoeboxes to O‘ahu keiki. We’ll collect shoeboxes and monetary donations until Saturday, December 8. For more information, see Georgine or go to the collection table in the courtyard between services.
Process Forum
Saturday, December 8, 9:30 am • LCH Boardroom
Please join us in the LCH Boardroom for a session of process poetry. If you have a favorite poem, bring it with you and we will read and discuss it through the lens of process philosophy/theology. If you have no poem to share, come anyway and join in the discussion. All are welcome to be a part of this group, especially during the Advent season.
Presence Under the Tree
Christmas is often one of the hardest holidays for people who live close to the edge. During a season when many are celebrating holidays with lavish gifts, sumptuous feasts, and family gatherings, others—because of poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse, struggles with mental health, or simply hard times—are barely making it. Christ calls us to be present with all who are in need and share our abundance.
This year, you have the opportunity to share Christ’s message of love, abundance, and mercy through “Presence Under the Tree.” On November 15, we will set up a symbolic tree in the nave. You may place gifts for children or adults, such as canned food, gift cards, clothing, shoes, etc., from Sunday, November 18 until the second Sunday of Advent. These items will be distributed to social service agencies in plenty of time for them to be distributed to those in need. Our hope is to make it easier for the LCH community to share God’s love in this much-needed way with our community.
We ask that all gifts or clothing be new and unwrapped. Homemade items, other than food (e.g. clothing, hand crafts, woodwork, etc.) are certainly welcome. Canned and packaged dry goods are acceptable foodstuffs. Gift cards for any retailer are welcome, but grocery store and drugstore cards are particularly appreciated.
We are thankful to be able to share God’s abundance with neighbors all around the O‘ahu. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff or Jean Lilley.
Invite Friends to Join Us during the Christmas Season
Here’s a convenient way to tell your friends about our upcoming worship services and to invite them to join you in celebrating the season. Research tells us that Facebook events are most effective two weeks before an event, so around December 10, we will create Facebook Events for our festive services of the Christmas season. Take a minute to share these events with friends who may be interested.

Monday, December 10, 4:30 pm
Writers’ Workshop meets in the LCH Boardroom. This is our final meeting of 2018. All are welcome. For more information contact the LCH office at 808-941-2566.

LCH members are encouraged to attend.

One Pot, One Hope
Saturday, December 29, 9:30 am
A consistent group of LCH volunteers helps feed 100 to 125 people each month in Wai‘anae. Help support this mission outreach project by participating or by bringing donations of designated items—Costco gallon-sized cans of chili, fresh fruit, granola bars, bottled water, recycled grocery bags, and large cardboard boxes—or checks, payable to “One Pot, One Hope.” Bring donated items to church on the third Sunday of the month. See Peggy Anderson for more information, including volunteering and carpool. Chili donations are appreciated, #10 sized cans (from Costco or Sam’s Club).
Christmas blessings from our wounded, ill, and injured and their families!
We thank members of our congregations for the many and varied ways they have assisted us in the past year. Not only did you contribute to allow us to respond to emergent needs, but you also provided gift cards that assist extended families who come for emergencies or those here who sometimes have insufficient funds to celebrate birthdays or Christmas with gifts for their children. Moreover, many of you use your memberships in various organizations, or ‘ohana relationships, to make opportunities available throughout the year for family day events, holiday celebrations, “day on the bay,” museum tours, art lessons, emergency car repairs, and so much more.
We may have fewer military members in combat these days, but training and deployments are still hazardous, and exposure to dangerous materials in foreign countries cause injury and illness that can be devastating—for the member and for their families. Post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury adversely affect veterans, and their loved ones, for years to come. Caregivers are stretched to the breaking point far too often, and relationships disintegrate, leaving children scarred.
Burn-pit smoke inhaled for months at a time and exposure to nuclear, biological, and chemical materials are increasingly resulting in cancers and blood diseases. Medical researchers are only now beginning to investigate the long-term adverse impact on those immunized against anthrax and other diseases. These are immunizations that most civilians are never required to have.
While our Wounded Warrior ministry continues to adapt as needs change, the emphasis at present is on assisting those transitioning back to civilian life. Disability determinations, claims, and pensions do not happen quickly or without hiccups. Jobs and school are often difficult for those who have attention span or memory issues or who simply do not seem to connect with peers who have never served, much less having been exposed to the horrors of war or large-scale humanitarian assistance.
There are so many individuals and organizations deserving of our attention and contributions throughout the year, but especially during the holidays. We encourage you to give as your heart leads you. If you wish to donate to the Wounded Warrior ministry at Lutheran Church of Honolulu, we will be most appreciative. We also invite you to drop off or send in any gift cards you receive or have on hand that you will not use. They make a big difference for some of our families during the holiday season. A few suggestions for gift cards:
- Cards we can use at Tripler are Starbucks and Subway.
- Cards for families in crisis are Visa gift cards, gas cards, Walmart, Safeway, etc.
- Cards for kids’ birthdays and other celebrations are Chuck E. Cheese, Dave & Busters, movie theaters, and family restaurants.
Mahalo nui loa! May God richly bless you as we celebrate the birth of the Christ.
Warmest aloha,
Pr. Steve Jensen “Chaps”

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund
The church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.
Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
