Proactive Faith
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19
A couple of months ago, many of us here in Hawai‘i spent many hours preparing our homes and lives for a hurricane that never really arrived on O‘ahu. Sadly, our neighbor island residents suffered from severe flooding, heavy winds, and loss of property. Near Hanalei, a stream whose flow has remained unchanged for decades suddenly jumped its banks and coursed right through the middle of a home. No one could have predicted the change of course, nor could anyone do anything about it.
Here on O‘ahu, families whose homes have fronted North Shore beaches for decades now find their homes literally perched on a cliff. The landscape is changed forever; nature and time have a way of doing that. For the families and communities affected, the changing landscape is incredibly painful. Some have been left without a home or the means to rebuild; others are looking for alternative ways to mitigate the damage. But the undeniable truth is staring the world in the face—the world is changing.
For us, and other island dwellers, the effects of climate change are painfully obvious. Beaches that used to be expansive are disappearing altogether. The frequency of flooding in low-lying areas, like Kaka‘ako and Waikīkī, has increased wildly in just the past ten years. Reaction by state and city officials, developers, and even local residents has been slow. Despite numerous warnings about coastal flooding in the next 20 years, development in low-lying waterfront areas continues, unabated. I guess it is easier to simply hope for the best rather than be proactive.
In antiquity, the people of Israel also endured a sea change that threatened their very existence. The Promised Land was under constant siege by warring neighbors and inter-tribal warfare. In the midst of the chaos, the prophet Isaiah speaks out against greed, avarice, gluttony and idolatry. But most of all, he speaks up for the widow and the pauper, reminding God’s people that God’s promise to abide with them forever remains intact, but their commitment to God seemed more than a little frayed around the edges. Through the trials and tribulations, God gives the people of God a word of hope. “I am doing a new thing,” God declares. This new thing brings life to the parched desert of hopelessness. God’s new thing declares old debts paid and old thirsts slaked, and it paints a vision of a renewed people. But it took more than wistful hoping to see that new vision. God’s people were called to be proactive—to renew their commitment to God and to one-another and to live anew the covenant God made with them and their ancestors.
In our own Christian church, we are seeing the streams of denominationalism, colonialism, and social dominance jump their banks as well. The religious landscape we have come to know and love is changing as rapidly as the streams in Hanalei. I wonder how we will hear God’s promises for us and for our children for the future. Will we wistfully remember the good old days and hope for a reprieve, or will we begin to look more deeply to see ourselves in the new thing that God is doing in the world?
Blessings,
Pastor Jeff
From Vicar Andy
Aloha, everyone!
Last month felt like a full immersion into parish ministry. With Pastor Jeff on vacation, I took the lead on pastoral responsibilities at LCH. I never felt alone or that I was not supported—mahalo to all those who assisted me in one way or another.
October was a month full of ministry, both here at LCH and in the greater community! Some of the highlights included: leading the complete liturgy (less the Words of Institution) and preaching three Sundays in a row, attending the Give Aloha celebration on behalf of LCH, marching with parishioners from LCH and Christ Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyterians in the Gay Pride Parade, attending Theoasis in Palm Desert, and MCing LutherFest. It was an exhausting month, but it also was incredibly rewarding and educational.
We are still looking for Advent devotions! If you have an interest in contributing to this project, please let me know. Submissions are due on November 11. Please email me for a list of available verses.
Finally, I want to say mahalo to everyone who wished me well before my grandfather’s funeral service and checked in with me when I returned. It was a beautiful service, and my homily was well received by everyone in attendance. I do not often save my sermons, but I did save that one.
See you in church,
Vicar Andy
Stewardship 2018–2019
Your stewardship committee is transitioning from the usual “Triple T” phrase—time, talent, and treasure—to the “Double G” duo of generosity and gratitude (or is it gratitude and generosity? Which do you suppose comes first?).
- “Gratitude and generosity are two of the paths back to our true nature.”—Ike Allen
- “No one has ever become poor by giving.”—Anne Frank
- “True generosity: you give your all and yet you feel as if it costs you nothing.”—Simone de Beauvoir
How would you complete the following statements?
I am grateful for…, or I give thanks to God for…
I live out my gratitude by giving generously of my…
During the months to come, we will keep stewardship in the forefront. We can all learn and grow from one another as we hear each other’s stewardship stories—stories of experiencing God’s generosity. God has given us much and entrusted us with much. As we experience God’s generosity, our hearts are filled with gratitude which we express through our own active and generous giving. And indeed, this congregation is one whose members already give exceedingly generously, and so we thank you for your generosity.
Are there new horizons to which God is calling us, where our generosity is needed? How each of us gives or lives out our gratitude is unique and special. We invite you to share your stories of gratitude and generosity with the stewardship team and the whole congregation.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.—Colossians 3:16–17

New games are also welcome for after-dinner entertainment. For more information, contact Jim Cartwright. Please share information of this gathering and an invitation to other LGBTQI and friends you know who may be interested in socializing with us.
Presence Under the Tree
Christmas is often one of the hardest holidays for people who live close to the edge. During a season when many are celebrating holidays with lavish gifts, sumptuous feasts, and family gatherings, others—because of poverty, homelessness, domestic abuse, struggles with mental health, or simply hard times—are barely making it. Christ calls us to be present with all who are in need and share our abundance.
This year, you have the opportunity to share Christ’s message of love, abundance, and mercy through “Presence Under the Tree.” On November 15, we will set up a symbolic tree in the nave. You may place gifts for children or adults, such as canned food, gift cards, clothing, shoes, etc., from Sunday, November 18 until the second Sunday of Advent. These items will be distributed to social service agencies in plenty of time for them to be distributed to those in need. Our hope is to make it easier for the LCH community to share God’s love in this much-needed way with our community.
We ask that all gifts or clothing be new and unwrapped. Homemade items, other than food (e.g. clothing, hand crafts, woodwork, etc.) are certainly welcome. Canned and packaged dry goods are acceptable foodstuffs. Gift cards for any retailer are welcome, but grocery store and drugstore cards are particularly appreciated.
We are thankful to be able to share God’s abundance with neighbors all around the O‘ahu. If you have any questions, please contact Jeff or Jean Lilley.
First Half of the Annual Meeting
November 18, 9:15 am • between services in Isenberg Hall
Each year congregational members gather as a community to tend to important matters of business and ministry. These include nominating leadership, passing a budget, receiving reports, and discussing our missional objectives. At LCH, we divide our annual meeting into two halves. In November we will nominate Congregational Council members to take office in January, review the draft budget, and conduct any other business that might need to be transacted. In January the main business is to approve a final budget for the new year and elect the new council members. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings, but only members in good standing may vote. Please plan to attend!
Please Consider Serving on the Church Council
We need nominees to be presented at the first half of our Annual Meeting, on November 18, to fill council vacancies. The work of the council is important, interesting, informative, good fellowship, and fun!
The work of the Council is not scary, intimidating, overly time consuming, or difficult to understand.
What to expect:
- One, 2-hour meeting per month. Council members take turns hosting, providing a meal and short devotion, and also serve a month as “council in charge,” ensuring that the church is locked up and items put away after the last worship service on Sunday morning.
- You can also expect to communicate during the month via texting or email if necessary. If you don’t text or have email, we can make arrangements for you—don’t let that stop you from saying yes to serving on Council.
- Council members also serve as liaisons to church committees or teams to communicate back to the council on planned activities or needs. Planned and unplanned absences are expected and taken into consideration, so don’t assume you can’t serve if you’ll be away for a month or two.
Please consider putting your name on the ballot to serve on the 2019 LCH church council. Still have questions? Just ask a current council member: Josie Bidgood, Mary Fastenau, Steve Miller, Juditha Murashige, Bruce Holmberg, Noe Nitz, Carol Langner, Rev. Phyllis Hormann, Pam Buckley, Willow Chang, Hunter Nishimura, or Pastor Jeff.
Mahalo for your prayerful consideration of serving as part of the Council!
Compline
Sunday, November 18, 7:30 pm
Join us on the first and third Sunday of each month for Compline, led a cappella by the LCH Men’s Schola. This is a peaceful experience of rejuvenation and prayer.
LCH Women’s Book Club
Monday, November 19, 10:00 am
We meet at the Murashige’s to review The Girl with Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee. This story offers deep insight into life in North Korea and one woman’s struggle to find freedom. Discussion will be led by Billie Jean Ries. Newcomers are welcome. Please contact the church office if you have questions, 808-941-2566.
Thanksgiving Eve Joint Worship
Wednesday, November 21, 7:00 pm • St. Clement Church
St. Clement Church is hosting the Thanksgiving Eve worship this year. Pastor Jeff Lilley is scheduled to preach.
The annual pie reception will follow immediately after worship. Sign-up sheets for the pie reception will be made available starting Sunday, November 4.
LCH Office Closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday

Annual Thanksgiving Dinner at LCH
Thursday, November 23, 3:30 pm • Isenberg Hall and Hörmann Courtyard
All are welcome to join the LCH ‘ohana for our annual Thanksgiving Dinner in the courtyard. This is a potluck meal for anyone who would like to attend. Please bring your friends, neighbors, college and university students, and folks who would like some fellowship and food. Pastor Jeff and Jean will prepare the turkeys and bring fresh-baked rolls. A donation of ham would be appreciated. Please plan to bring your favorite dish in quantities to feed at least six persons. Pupu, side dishes, casseroles, desserts, or any other dish is very welcome! Please sign up in the courtyard beginning November 6 so we can plan accordingly.
One Pot, One Hope
Saturday, November 24, 9:30 am
A consistent group of LCH volunteers helps feed 100 to 125 people each month in Wai‘anae. Help support this mission outreach project by participating or by bringing donations of designated items—Costco gallon-sized cans of chili, fresh fruit, granola bars, bottled water, recycled grocery bags, and large cardboard boxes—or checks, payable to “One Pot, One Hope.” Bring donated items to church on the third Sunday of the month. See Peggy Anderson for more information, including volunteering and carpool. Chili donations are appreciated, #10 sized cans (from Costco or Sam’s Club).
44th Annual Advent Procession: The Great “O” Antiphons
Sunday, December 2, 7:30 pm
Lutheran Church of Honolulu celebrates our 44th Annual Advent Procession with Peter Hallock’s mystical setting of the Great “O” Antiphons. First presented in 1975, the Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Advent Procession has become a Honolulu tradition. This year, Advent choral selections by composers Francisco Guerrero, Andreas Hammerschmidt, George Oldroyd, Charles Wood, and others will be intermingled with hymns, carols, and the Magnificat by Edward Bairstow. Organist Mark Wong will accompany the LCH Choir and Men’s Schola on our beautiful Beckerath organ. Please join us as we begin a new liturgical year, carry on a beloved Hawai‘i tradition, and look forward with expectation and wonder to the Christmas season ahead.
Congregation PV Purchase Meeting
Sunday, December 16, 9:15 am
Steve Miller will lead a discussion, between services, of the pros and cons of purchasing the photo-voltaic (PV) system installed at LCH. The system is leased to the church by the current owner, who is motivated to sell. According to the church Constitution (Citation 10.02), expenditure amounts in excess of five percent of the approved budget require approval by congregation meeting. LCH members are encouraged to attend.
Committee Chairs
It’s time to begin compiling the Annual Report! Please submit your committee’s yearly report to the LCH office by Monday, December 17. Direct questions to the office at 808-941-2566 or email lch@LCHwelcome.org.
Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund
The church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.
Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
Save on Your Taxes!
For individuals taking req-uired distributions from a retirement account, under the new tax law, if you give cash or check donations from your personal funds, you will be taxed on them and you may not be able to take the deduc¬tion. There are two ways to avoid this.
- Donate directly to LCH from your IRA. If you take money directly from your IRA to give it to LCH, this increases your income and may increase your tax bracket. You may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Give directly by telling your IRA provider to donate to the church—the account representative will do this easily.
- Give appreciated stock directly to LCH. If you sell stock and then donate, it increases your tax bracket, and you may not be able to use the deduction because of the new, higher standard deduction. Instruct your broker to donate directly to LCH.
The church’s legal name and address is:
Lutheran Church of Honolulu (Note: no The in the title)
1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822
If you need the Federal Tax ID (EIN) or if you have questions, please contact Steve Miller. As always, please check with your tax advisors to determine what is appropriate for you.
