FAQ—VICAR

On July 15, we were delighted to welcome our new vicar, Andrew Flatt-Kuntze, along with his husband Justin. They are already making solid connections in the congregation and have even attended a couple of social events. Andy survived his first Hukilau colleague meeting and was a great contributor to the Thursday Bible Study. Welcome, Vicar Andy and Justin!

welcome graphicWhile LCH has hosted many interns over the years, it has been over a decade since we had our last intern. It might be helpful to review what an intern does and how we can help him make his internship experience bear the most fruit. So, here are a few things I thought might be helpful.

Q: What is an intern (or vicar)? ELCA candidates for ordained ministry must complete three years (equivalent) of master’s-level study and 9 to 12 months (2,000 hours) of full-time internship prior to approval for ordination. During that period, the vicar usually serves full time in a congregation or agency, under the supervision of an experienced pastor. While on internship he will focus on vocational skill development and pastoral formation through experiential learning, study, and personal/professional interaction.

Q: What will his role be at LCH? Vicar Andy is, first and foremost, a student. His primary role is to learn all he can. He will function in many of the same ways as Pastor Jeff, although he is not able to preside at Holy Communion, baptize, or perform marriages. He will share the roles of worship leader, preacher, teacher, listener, youth leader, and even janitor. He is bound by the same principles of confidentiality and Holy Presence expected of any pastor.

Q: How long is the internship? Vicar Andy will be with us for one year. During that year he may be absent for periods of time, as we are trying to arrange for him to spend time at some other agencies and congregations so that he can have the broadest possible internship experience.

Q: How can we contact the vicar? Vicar Andy can be reached at vicar.andy@lchwelcome.org or by calling the church office at 808-941-2566. He is off on Mondays and Saturdays.

Q: Who is the vicar’s supervisor? Pastor Jeff is Andy’s immediate supervisor, with full responsibility for his internship experience. Vicar Andy also has a lay committee providing additional guidance and help. They will also work with the Andy to develop a congregational project to be completed before the close of internship.

Q: What is expected of us as a congregation? Vicar Andy’s internship experience rests on you! Be willing to let him into your life. Invite Andy and Justin out for lunch after worship or to your homes during the week. Encourage him in his work and in his formation as a pastor. When he does well, don’t hesitate to tell him. Be kind in your constructive criticism, but don’t be shy about sharing your ideas for improvement. Listen to him. He is a bright and enthusiastic individual who has great gifts to bring to ministry here at LCH. Treat him with respect, kindness, and care.

We are delighted to have Vicar Andy here during his internship year and hope his presence will signal the beginning of LCH’s return to regular hosting of interns. Blessings on Andy and Justin in their new life in Honolulu!

Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

Aloha LCH!

Justin, Harper, and I landed on July 12 and were greeted with warm aloha, throughout the weekend, by countless parishioners! You made us instantly feel at home. (The beautiful furnished apartment has also been a blessing.) Mahalo! It’s hard to believe I’ve been in the office a little over two weeks already. Already I am looking forward to getting to know one another and doing ministry together for the next year.

Over the next year, you can expect that I will be writing articles for our newsletter, HeartBeat, on a regular basis. But, I will keep this one brief. If you would like contact me, for any reason, my LCH email is vicar.andy@lchwelcome.org, and I am usually in my office Tuesday–Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. I also will be in worship on Sundays. I hope you will be too.

Blessings,
Vicar Andy

News of Family Promise and Shallow Subsidy

Family Promise logoSamantha Church, the executive director of Family Promise, came to the LCH council meeting on June 26 to share news of their agency. A new network of participating churches, serving Wahiawā and the North Shore, is being formed by churches in that area eager to help address the housing crisis in their part of the island. It will take them about a year to make all the arrangements necessary, and they are anxious to be up and operational.

Family Promise has a comprehensive approach to helping families successfully navigate the challenges of our scarce, expensive housing inventory. Their goal is stable housing for families. In the first half of 2018, they helped 33 families transition into appropriate housing.

Family Promise of Hawai‘i’s services include:

  • Diversion—Supportive services for families with children who are experiencing crisis and are at risk of becoming homeless. This includes families staying with relatives, couch surfing, or facing eviction. Families enrolled in the diversion program may access the Family Day Centers, where they can meet with a case manager, search for housing, and utilize the facility. The goal of the diversion program is to work with families experiencing a crisis before they become homeless.
  • Emergency Shelter—Emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness. Approximately 86% of enrolled families transition into housing within 3-4 months. Family Promise partners with local interfaith congregations and community groups to provide overnight accommodations and meals within their facilities. During the day, enrolled families can come to Family Day Centers to access comprehensive support services such as case management, job training, education, life skills, and housing support.
  • After Care Supportive Services—Follow-up support services to families who have graduated the program for 6-months. This approach empowers families to achieve self-sufficiency. Skilled staff and volunteers provide a variety of workshops, on-going training, and mentorship to help families achieve sustainable housing. Areas covered include job training, case management, financial literacy, nutrition, hygiene, and tenant training.
  • New Staff—A new program director, Josh Gaoteote.

Through the Shallow Subsidy program, LCH has enabled two families (10 people!) secure stable housing. Our donations make a Shallow Subsidy of $3,600 available for a family transitioning into permanent housing, to help with monthly rent and other costs until the family’s finances are stable. We look forward to working with Josh, their new program director, as we await our third family. We are also helping our first family relocate to a more reasonable apartment by assisting with upfront costs, such as down payment and first month’s rent.

We all know that LCH is a generous and loving congregation. Our concern for our neighbors in Honolulu has motivated us to support this ministry. We could not do this without Family Promise, as we do not have the resources or the expertise to manage this on our own. If you would like to make a monthly gift to this ministry via electronic funds transfer (EFT), Bill Potter can help you set that up, or you can make a donation anytime; just identify your gift as support for Family Promise ministry. Thank you!

Do you play an instrument? Do you like to sing? Have you enjoyed the experience of being in a choir or other musical ensemble in the past but don’t currently participate? Auditions for the LCH Choir and Early Worship Ensemble will be held during the last week of August, by appointment. These sessions are meant to be relaxed and fun and are a way for the director to get to know you a bit more as a musician. If you have questions or would like to set up a time to meet, please contact Scott Fikse, director of music and liturgy, by email at scott@LCHwelcome.org.

SophiaSophia Wins Award at MAOTeen!

Sophia had an amazing week at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen national competition in Orlando, Florida. She won $1,000 for the Spirit of America Award (basically the Miss Congeniality Award) through votes from her fellow contestants. She was also awarded an additional $1,000 and four-year full tuition scholarships to a number of colleges nationwide, including the Manhattan School of Music!

She did a wonderfull job singing for the talent. Everyone was amazed that she was only 13 years old. They loved her sense of caring, sharing, and spirit of aloha.

Sophia looks forward to her year of service as Miss Hawai‘i Outstanding Teen and thanks her LCH family for their continued love and support.

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
