Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 26—September 26, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, the rich man and Lazarus, a poor man, die. Lazarus ends up in the bosom of Abraham, but the rich man is in torment. It seems to say that being rich is a bad thing, but that’s not the lesson. We are all rich, and it is important for us to help others. When we share with others, we get that greatest gift.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 25—September 19, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about a business manager who cheats the owner. We know that cheating is wrong, but Jesus praises the manager. This story is not about cheating; it’s about paying attention and planning ahead. The manager depends on the people below him, and our lives depend on Jesus.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 23—September 5, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s reading we heard about Philemon and his slave Onesimus. Onesimus had helped Paul in prison, so Paul sent him back and asked Philemon to receive him as a friend and not as a slave. We don’t know what happened, but I bet that Philemon understood the love of God and treated Onesimus as a friend.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 22—August 29, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus is at a party and sees people taking the best seats. He says that it would be better to take a less important seat and be asked to move up. He’s talking about humility. That’s a big word for not thinking too much of yourself. God wants us to remember we are all in life together, and we should think about other people.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 21—August 22, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we are talking about a big word: “sabbath.” Remember how God created the world in six days and then rested. That was the sabbath, and God gave it to all of us for rest—and fun. Now we have sabbath on Sunday, and we can rest and have fun at worship. God gave the sabbath for all of you.

Mary, Mother of Our Lord—August 15, 2010
Preacher: Jacob Burkman
Summary: In Sunday School today, you learned about the Holy Trinity. Also today in worship, we celebrate Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is an example to us of living faithful lives.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 19—August 8, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Can you tell me what faith is? It’s hard. But if I ask you what this is on my stole, you can tell me because you have seen a tree. If I ask you to close your eyes and not think of a pink flower, you can’t do that because I put the idea in your head. Faith is like that. Jesus and God have put the idea in our hearts, and we can’t get it out. We can’t see faith, but because God put it in our hearts, we can believe God and know that God loves us.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 18—August 1, 2010
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Which is better, one serving of your favorite food or two? Or do you want even more? In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells about a man who has much more than he needs. He could have shared or given some away, but he built even more buildings to store everything, and then he died. Jesus says that God has given us all that we need. When we make stuff more important that God, we get in trouble.
